A lot of temp sensors are used by the ECU to determine open/closed loop status by engine temps. If it's messing with his tune tell him to get a new tune IMO.

Yes temp sensor is one of the key ingredients in a tune. also TPS and MAP have huge factors in how a car runs. if the sensor is unplugged it goes to fail safe/Limp mode. and wont correct the A/F based on O2 calculations.

his tune is probably so far off that his car runs better in limp mode when the temp sensor is unplugged or maybe his is not working correctly and needs a new one.
