View Full Version : My BIG turbo build at Slowhawks

As a few of you know i have a turbocharged 99 trans am. I bought it stock, it went through a nitrous phase then i decided to turbo it. swapped in a 6.0 and a t76 and ran it for a couple years. the kit was Extremely restrictive and of poor quality , constantly in need of welding because of cracking. So i decided to hit don up and we worked out a deal to tag team the new turbo build.
The car drove in as this:
TTI street kit (log manifold on driverside with manifold on pass side crossed over) rated at 450-500 before it becomes restrictive.
t76 turbo
Stock 6.0 shortblock
stock ls1 intake
selfported 317 heads
F-11 cam
3 inch thick air to air intercooler rated at 550hp
38mm turbo smart wastegate.

I hate typing.......anyways , so first heres the star of the show.
Here is the old t4 76mm next to the new t6 71MM ....yes thats right.... its not the size of the inlet that counts its the amount of cfm the compressor can supply. the t76 is rated at about 500-600hp with the exhaust housing it has on it. the new 71mm is rated at 850hp
http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr123/mikalmyerz1031/Jan2011024.jpg

Both have an A/R of .96 on the exhaust side

Day one consisted of getting the old turbo kit off and pulling the radiator and intake and front cap to make room for the new intake , radiator relocation, and new turbo kit.

Couplers anyone LOL?

Had a tire on the highway rip part of the charge pipe off, this was a "quick fix" but it worked.

If not then I guess that's just one more reason why I need to get my ass over there lol.

Good job! I love this build mostly because it was a shocking budget/easy way of makeing the bigger cube motors make crazy power without crazy mods, but now you're pushing it to its capabilities.

So you're using 6.0L truck manifolds flipped? Are all 6.0L manifolds the same, I would imagine the truck's are different from the suv's. They seem to fit pretty well what were you using for manifolds previously some custom ones from the kit?

Keeping the ac is always possible when building a turbo kit ,but in every turbo build ,it always comes at the cost of efficiency do to the kits routing. The point to this build was 0 loss in efficiency. The first kit I had kept the ac, but I had the previously mentioned problems. So ac had to go. Besides, I have had the car for over 3 years all of which where in Cali. Can't remember but 3 times where I actually used my ac, and all were just to impress someone. Lol

You may regret that after the first summer here without it.... In CA humidity is not really a huge issue, while here it's typically 90%+ in the summer.... So a temp of 85 feels like 95+, and you'll realize A/C is really helpful.

I hope I'm wrong, but don't be surprised when you miss it:Oops:

Ok.... I'll post the graph later but before we did the kit I wanted to get a base on dons dyno. I've always dynod on a dynojet.

Turned the boost down to a controllable level.

So the base was 492hp and 540trq at 14psi

(Best was 17 psi and a little race gas to hit 621 hp on a dynojet)

Today...........

First pull was 540 hp and 492 trq at 8psi with NO tune change period!!!

Upd the boost to 11 psi and it made 592hp and 580trq.

Stopped for the day because I had to leave early . Leaving for four days be back to play some more..

Mind you this is a BONE stock 90,000 mile shortblock. I'm already past the flywheel hp limits of the motor. The goal was to gain efficiancy and durability . Now the short block is the limiting factor in power output:sCh_elmodance:

TrickrTreat
03-03-2011, 03:31 AM
Quick math for you while looking at this graph

With 3 less psi

@5600 rpm

I gained 100 hp and 90 trq to the tires.

This cam and heads arent holding the car back. It's the short block. WE stoped at 11 psi. Coulda kept going with the turn of a knob. I'm already over 650 flywheel horsepower . Mind you I'm through a auto. That's waaaaaaaay past the limit of the stock 6.0. But This kit will support 1000hp easy.

This turbo is the easiest to upgrade. 500$ and I can get it upgraded to what ever i want all the way up to a 91mm.

THING IS A BEAST!

Made 630 hp 639 trq with 13.5 psi and 93 octane.

Ran it through the 1/4 real quick on the simulater. Forgot the rev limiter was set at 6400 so i was on it before i hit the finish.

left off 1000 rpm (brakes wouldnt hold) then hit it hard, eased off so it wouldnt be to rough on second then when it took second i hammered down on it.

60' 1.68
330' 4.42
660' 6.66 @ 112 !!!
1000' 8.52
1/4 10.16 @ 126 (limiter)

Shes got 9's in her ALLLL DAAAYY.

Graph from today. i F'd the before and after graph up so ill have to get don to print another.

i guess with a 25" tall tire I can see 600 rpm in the converter and posible trans slippage could just run a 28" tire at the track

i am, im going to a 28" asap. all the time.

Doesn't need one imo . i ran my last turbo kit with the same "mesh screen" setup and it was mounted low to the ground under the car for 2 years. when i pulled all the piping and intercooler and intake off, it was like new, no dust or grime or anything. .

So up inside the engine compartment, should be perfectly fine.

I like that goal!

I believe its 100% possible with this new setup too. Its sooooo strong.

I mean i know there's guys out there that make more then me,
700, 800+ hp , but i dont think they are trying to drag there vehicles to the limit.

I'm gonna do everything i can to put every bit of my usable power, to the pavement!

THEN ill have to try to find the right class too run in, that i can be Competitive in.

Trans is in!!!!!

Don Rough tuned it in for low boost (9psi) friday. Feels AWSOME gotta work on rerouting my fuel system up front, set the shift points, and tune it for 13 psi.

Shell be ready for the dyno day though .

How much of your gain do you think was from the intake swap over the stock intake?

not much......i know that when i went from my ls6 back to my stock ls1 i saw maybe 3 hp drop, which could have just been attributed to air temp outside.

The main reason for doing it was to help even out the cylinders afr wise, and looks :)

maybe at 1000 hp It would be a big difference between intakes on turbo cars, but from what I've seen and what others contest to , is its the consistency your chasing not so much the hp.

Thanks! Ya it feels awsome!! Just got the shift points worked out yesterday and turned the boost back up. Made 613 on 12.5 psi. And ran a 9.96 on slowhawks dyno 1/4 simulater leaving easy. Should lay down some sick numbers on the 1320.
