Northeast Rod Run

Hey guys, here is a summary of a small roadtrip that I set up every year. 2011 will be our 4th year doing this and the number of participants have grown every year. Still not a huge group, but it's not uncommon to be cruising down the highway with at least 30 different musclecars at any one time.
For the third time in our four years, things will be kicking off from a new location, this time at the Wyndham Hotel in Portland, Maine.
Once the trip gets underway Saturday morning, we will be heading over to Route 1 and following the coast up through some of New England's small fishing towns until we arrive at the Owl's Head Transportation Museum in Rockland, Maine. After everyone gets their fill of what Owl's Head has to offer, the Rod Run will continue north and if the weather cooperates we will take a quick stop in Camden, to make a run up Mt. Battie and get a lookout over Penobscot Bay and actually be able to see Mt. Desert Island off in the distance. From there we will continue onto the Penobscot Narrows Bridge as we cross over onto Mt. Desert Island and Bar Harbor for our final stop of the day. Hopefully we will be there by mid-afternoon, so that everyone will have plenty of time to take in some of the Eastern Seaboard's most beautiful coastline, while also enjoying a nice ride through Acadia National Park. As we lose daylight, people can take in the sunset over the harbor on the town green, and then later can enjoy a nice relaxing night at any one of the many the restaurants and bars downtown. For the more adventurous, they can re-enter the park and take a late night ride up to the top of Cadillac Mountain under just the light of the moon and stars. Yes, I mean drive up a winding mountain road that has NO lighting. Bring a flashlight!
When Sunday morning comes around, the early risers can once again take a trip up to the top of the highest peak on the Atlantic coast, to take in a sunrise over the harbor, from the first place in the United States that the sun rises every morning. Our first stop of the day will the Cole Transportation Museum in Bangor, Maine. From there we will head west along Route 2 into New Hampshire, until we arrive in the Mount Washington Valley area.
As always (except maybe 2012), the Northeast Rod Run will conclude on Monday. This is when we all usually head our own way, but for those that want to extend it a little more, the trip will continue in the shadows of the Presidential Mountain Range.
If this sounds like your type of thing, go over to our small website at www.northeastrodrun.com sign up on the forum and check things out. You can also search us out on Facebook and MySpace (that one isn't updated too often) and see plenty of pictures, from past trips on those sites.
If anyone has questions, they are best off asking through the website or the Rod Run's email because we are on a lot of forums so it's hard to get back to all of them in a timely manner
Thanks for reading and hope to see some of you on this year's Run!

Hope to see you on it this year then. It's a very laidback time with cool people. The average age of the participants is probably early to mid-forties, and they've "all been there - done that", so nobody on the trip feels the need to try and impress anyone else, as I've seen on these types of things before. There are a couple of younger people also, but even those guys/girls don't cause any trouble.
It's very loosely organized by only those of us that go on the trip, so all we ask is that everyone leave their egos at the door. We want to see this grow, but we don't want the immaturity that sometimes goes with bigger events, if you all know what I mean.
Not trying to sound like an ass, or make us sound like a bunch of old farts, but I think you all can see what I'm trying to say. Don't get me wrong, there is some "spirited driving" amongst the people involved, but they all know when and where they should or shouldn't be doing it. We also usually have a pretty good time going late into the nights also. Those mornings are a real bear to get back up early and do it all over again though

If you go on NERR's forum, there are links to other hosting sites that have plenty more pics from past trips. We are still working on the website's gallery, so there really isn't much in there, but hopefully we will soon have that up to speed also
The website is something we started pushing just recently, so it would be easier for people to get all the info about the trips. I used to send out blanket emails to everyone, but we've started to get a little to big to be able to do that efficiently, so the website/forum just became a necessary addition.

We have people coming from SW Pennsylvania, South Jersey, Syracuse and Canada. I think the newest car in that group is almost 40 years old and probably doesn't get more than 12 MPG. At least you are still in New England and have a late model car that probably gets good mileage
Also, that cooler weather is one of the main reasons the trip is in October. That way more radically built cars don't have to worry as much about overheating problems
Just sayin'...............

That is a big reason why we hold this down to just an extended weekend affair. Would love to make it longer, but lots of people don't a lot of vacation time to burn on just one trip. The majority of people have weekends off, so it isn't that hard for them to get one extra day. Once people go on the Rod Run just once, they usually put in for their time off, for the next year's trip, as soon as they get home.
That is the beauty of this trip. No one has to wonder when the actual dates are for "the next trip". They just look at the calendar and see the first Saturday, Sunday, and Monday in October and know that's when the trip will be.

Here is a 9 minute clip of our first year in 2008. We have about tripled in size since then, and still keep meeting great people.

Kids welcome or is this more of an "adults only" type of trip?

Kids welcome or is this more of an "adults only" type of trip?
Our first year I told people it's not really for kids, just because I wanted to see how it played out.
After that first year, we realized that we've had such a great group of people, so a few people have now taken their children. Funny thing is that only one person has taken his teenage son and the rest have taken their daughters. I would have thought it the other way?
Also, the first year there only 3 couples, but now the majority of people going seem to be couples, eventhough they each might take their own car.
This is why I like to stress, while some of us might end up doing some "spirited runs" for short bursts, we don't need any people coming on the run thinking it's just all racing around. It is a mature group that pretty much knows when to say when and we don't need any assholes screwing it up for everyone else. This is another reason I gear this more toward American Muscle, instead of the import crowd. Most of that crowd is younger kids that don't really know how to just chill out. They are always trying to impress, they have their pants hanging off their asses, baseball hats on sideways, and always have their stereos cranking so everyone has to listen to their music. If you've ever been to any carshow, you know exactly what I'm talking about. This is not the image I want this thing to take on.
The nights are a different story. Some people party until the early morning hours, while others just use the downtime to have a relaxing night, and still others might end up going out to dinner together. Everyone always finds a group that suits their interests and might just kind of split off with them for the evenings.
Hope I cleared things up for you.

Maybe you will be able to join us on part of a future trip. We have at least a couple of people every year that might just join us for one or two nights.
We probably have 3 or 4 people this year that aren't staying over on Friday night and then a few more that are staying Friday, but aren't staying Sunday night
On the other side of the coin, we also have people that come from Canada, Buffalo, Syracuse, and mid-PA areas every year, that extend it a couple more days on top the the actual trip itself

Absolutely!! This goes on rain or shine and it's a great time no matter what.
Way to much goes into this event to cancel just because of some rain.
Almost a year ahead of time routes are planned out, hotels are booked, shop tours set-up, and discounted attractions arranged. People from 2 countries and over a half-dozen states attend this, so it isn't just a quick little cruise that can be re-scheduled at a later date.
Even with the possibility of some of the route washed out because of Hurricane Irene, it still goes on. We just alter the route a bit
there would have been some participation in the event IF you participated in some of the other rooms besides just pushing the rod run event.
If people dont get to know ya they wont attend.
Im just sayin is all.

Basically whenever I come on here, I just spend most of my time lurking in the "events" section and don't post much (just look at my history). I lurk around in other sections too, but mainly I just look for events local to me.
If people want to come on the run that's fine by me and if they don't want to, that's ok too, I'm not going to get offended if people don't want to try it out.
I'm just trying to let people know about something that they normally wouldn't know about. Most people have never been on a multi-day cruise, or even know where to find out about one, so that's all I'm trying to let them know about. Whereas NERR doesn't limit itself to just one single state or area (we have already been through 6 different states and will build on that next year), that is what makes it different from most everything else out there.
I just give quick updates on here and other forums, while saving the big updates for NERR's own site. Many of the forums that we post on, draw attendees from them.
Probably 75% of the people that go on NERR had never met me, or anyone else on the trip, before they actually attended one, but everyone has always had a good time. That's part of the draw for some people. Meeting up with new people and seeing great sites while cruising some beautiful roads and byways. I actually thought you might have been joining us, with your early interest. We actually had our first two participants join us from CT this year (one in a first gen Mustang and another in a Chevy 300 post car). You missed out on a great trip.
yeah both cars are broke.
otherwise i would have taken the vette out.
