ok i asked the question on bigger oil filter next one is what would be the best oil to use and weight???? i use molbil 1 10/30 is there any advantage on using a heavier oil in the ltx or lsx motors. i know the tolerances are a little tighter on 2nd and 3rd gen chevys verses the gen 1.

I personally use mobil 1 10w-30 as well, but I add the lucas oil heavy duty oil stabilizer to it. I noticed a big reduction in rocker/lifter noise, shit definitly works. Before, if you stood by the front of my car, all you could hear was my valvetrain. I know a few people who use royal purple, but its WAY too expensive, and it cant be THAT much better. Plus, I never got my free T-shirt from them, BASTARDS!!!!! :madfu:

If you use amsoil use there filters. My car came factory with castrol syntec so i use that so with 50k of my abuse and 6700rpms plus lol it's still good. Mobil or castrol is good and i use 5w30

I use whatever synthetic is on sale. They all have to pass the same tests no one will exceed those tests. And royal purple is only good if you have a race car. Its stays thin at any given temp so you can race off the trailer. Otherwise it has no benefit in my book. And I also have used all forms of synthetic in my car and have noticed no difference in performance or engine noise. Ever. If that helps. If we get some more good info and this doesn't turn to a shit show/debating match ill sticky it. For peoples future referrence. Keep up the good work guys.

I've used the Brad Penn break in oil before and it is hands down the best I have used. For flat tappet cam motors I like to use their normal oil minus one qt and then a qt of break in with each oil change.. their break in oil has one of the highest amounts of zinc and phosphorus you can get in a oil. They also have a very good assembly lube

Yea, I agree that no synthetic is better than the other, but if you do the mix with the lucas oil heavy duty oil stabilizer, it quiets down the valvetrain significantly (at least in my car) Its really thick stuff.

The only way to know for sure which oil is the best is to run different ones then take samples and have them analyzed by a lab. I know people that actually test oil swear by Castrol Syntec European Formula. I also read that Mobil One is not as good as it used to be.

I use mobile 1, I think they are all right about the same, I am testing out different weights though to see if it quiets down my engine so far no difference.

started running 10w40 not long ago and it really helped with the (ls1 rocker tick). Castrol HM. (use high mile cuz I know my pan gasket is beginning to show signs of age)
other than that I've almost always used Castrol, or whatever was on sale.

so the 10/40 not to heavy for the motor, i was thinking of using a heavier than 30 for my car. i do use additives lucus synthetic oil treatment and seemed to help a little, the biggest prob i have is a wrist pin momentary knock when the car is cold at first start up for only a few seconds.i wanted to rebuild my motor over the winter, low budget thing sense i spent most of the money getting the body fixed.

Sounds more like an empty lifter/sticking check valve in the lifter. Try a little atf in it for a few minutes before an oil change. Some times the free up.

ive only ever used mobil 1 and royal purple in my car...i like using the 10w30 now tho cause it does quiet the valvetrain noise quite a bit than when i run 5w30. I went back to mobil 1 cause it doesnt seem to burn as much as the royal purple

Haha, I know a guy who uses shell oil from the gas stations, he claims its the cheapest and says oil is oil...maybe its true lol

yeah almost all gas stations/repair shops just go with the cheapest oil they can buy other wise unless they charged 30 bux for an oil change they're losing money. and i have never had an issue with oil all be it the cheapest of the cheap shit we used, ruin a motor. Now one of the kids leaving the drain plug off........

You would be surprised on how often this happens, just think if your at one of the quick lube places and your not watching them when they would start a car then realize they forgot the oil then put it in hahaha then a month later why is my car making this weird noise.
