oh the balancer?

irockidz28
01-16-2012, 07:57 PM
yea the balancer slid all the way back to the timing cover.

i am kinda thinking about doing a stock lt1 cam...i can get one of those pretty easily....

SLP IROC-Z
01-16-2012, 08:42 PM
do it, do valve springs and stuff to if you already havent.

irockidz28
01-16-2012, 09:42 PM
could i get away with just stock lt1 springs? and what about injectors?

ILuvPizzaTimes10
01-17-2012, 12:30 AM
injectors should be fine with some pressure bump and stock LT1 springs wont fit correctly in those head. wrong installed height. get the right springs for your heads/installed height that are new!!!!

I have a 95 lt1 cam...

well after looking on jegs quickly it looks like the seated height is 1.700 when i search by car...but any idea what th inner/outter diameter should be?

01-17-2012, 02:05 AM
yeah LT1 installed height is 1.8. if you ran them theyd bind before you had the lifters all the way up. id have to go threw the specs again. looks like .650 ID and 1.25-1.310 OD MAY require machining depending on heads. Lt1 springs wont even fit your pockets! haha So yeah get the 918's as a kit. the hat will change the installed height. http://www.compperformancegroupstores.com/store/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=CC&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=26918-16

just go with "z28" springs from scoggin dickey, thats what i put in my 305.

SLP IROC-Z

if you have the desire, do vortec 305 heads and the vortec tpi base.

01-17-2012, 03:40 AM
He has a set of vortec 305 heads in his basement that I gave him and I told him I would give him my lt1 cam for free too.

irockidz28
01-17-2012, 03:59 AM
only problem is the vortec heads need to be cleaned up... and the vortec base was not part of my budget this year. the lack of plowin is not helping with the budget hahaha

been a long time since ive been into this stuff but i bet you can buy or atleast figure out a way to run beehive springs on a old sbc now a days.

SLP IROC-Z
01-17-2012, 04:22 AM
i bet a more efficient fuel injector would help a little to.

irockidz28
01-17-2012, 04:28 AM
yea its snowin but not enough around here haha

ill research it a bit and see what i can find for options before i make any deffinate decisions

SLP IROC-Z

center bolts?

no

SLP IROC-Z
01-18-2012, 12:38 AM
prob not then but block might have the spot for the spider.

ILuvPizzaTimes10
01-18-2012, 02:11 AM
yeah usually they have the boss for it but they are not drilled and tapped. its simple to do really just keep a shop vac handy and dont let the fillings deep in the motor and you can do it.

irockidz28
01-18-2012, 02:51 AM
so i take it you guys are talkin about this...
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tech-general-engine/217852-flat-tappet-factory-roller.html

so basically is what i would need is cam, lifters, pushrods, and timing chain. right? plus drill and tap possibly?

SLP IROC-Z
01-18-2012, 05:59 AM
yeah 86 blocks should have the bosses for the spider, like mike said drill and tap them.

Epic tpi build info in here.

01-19-2012, 12:35 AM
today a guy at work pulled his intake on his lt1 roadmaster cuz it was leakin so i got to take a look in his valley...no his had three bolts holding the 'spider' down and it was elevated by maybe like 3/8" my motor only has two places and they are not elevated. but the height could always be made up with a spacer but would two bolts be sufficient to hold it down..they are pretty close together...

ILuvPizzaTimes10
01-19-2012, 01:13 AM
nope your block doesnt have the right valley. Sorry buddy! But you can buy Retro Lifters.

Is that motor a lb9

irockidz28
01-19-2012, 01:41 AM
yea its a LB9

i feel like it would be a lot easier to just get a cam with similar specs to a lt1 that is made for my block lol

irockidz28
01-19-2012, 02:36 AM
possibly something like this.... http://www.jegs.com/i/Lunati/638/60100LK/10002/-1

id hate to see you put a cam in it first off spending the doe and Not getting what you really want from it! i say get what you KNOW will work on a stock tune. or spend your money were it really needs to be and get a real ECM for it. it will work for your car and i have a 1993 LT1 computer harness. its a FAR better PCM then the Tpi one you have and you will go speed density. and i have the tuning software to fuck with it wen you get a chip burner. or better yet save up piece by piece and get the 24x setup. either way your gunna be dissapointed and Very limited on the 86 PCM. sorry had a brain fart and felt like a rant was in order!!! SO FUCK YOU! hahaha

irockidz28
01-20-2012, 01:03 AM
^thanks real helpful. ahahaha

fuck it. im just going to put it back together for now. i got enough other stuff i got to dump money into. ill just port the base and do runners and call it good.

SLP IROC-Z

get a stock 85 305 tpi cam or a stock 85 350tpi vette cam. both are flat tappet and larger than what you got.

I had 1in my 79 z I had. I got the car for free it was in great shape but didn't have a motor my buddy at the time had a 86 z and I had built a 350 for and then he gave me the 305. I tell you that engine for a 305 was fkn great. I threw a 350 can and springs in it i dont remember what hight it i think it was 292 duration and that fken woke up for a 305. There were many times I was street racing with it when I lived in Florida and just about buried the tack lol. God I miss that fin car. I think you should throw a can in it while you have it apart. The only thing you got to watch out for is the lobe height doesn't hit the block. I know its only a 305 but sometimes you only got what you got to work with so your not spending a ton of money on it. Good luck with it.

01-23-2012, 12:52 AM
well i guess the question is.. how much cam can run on the stock tune? would the lt1 have been too big? if that cam would work on stock tune then i would just find something a little smaller then with my 1.6 rockers it would be equivelant..brand new cam, lifter packages are cheap enough for my car then its just timing chain and springs

SLP IROC-Z
01-23-2012, 01:08 AM
keep it under .500 lift total at the valve. if you can find an aftermarket cam with similar duration and lsa to a stock 85 350/305 TPI cam that would probably keep it running the best with a stock ecm. save for a 24x swap. id really be interested in seeing how a tuned port motor runs with that setup on it.

irockidz28
01-23-2012, 01:52 AM
i feel like thats going to be a huge pain to get working right. lol

so just to update this. my new balancer should be in tomorrow. the alternator got a much needed rebuild. just got a little more cleaning up and a little painting to do then should be going back together by the end of the week.

and i think the deffinite plan is to save up and next winter do the 24x swap with my vortec heads and a cam
