Buy a used car from a gas station? I'm looking for a DD since my brother graduates college in a few months so I figured id hand the camry Down to him. It will be cheap
around 3000. Also anyone have a suggestion on a DD? I'm looking for a small 4 banger, reliable and probably Manuel. I found a Corolla for sale but its at a gas station. Not sure if I can trust that.

If its in mass not only are we covered by the lemon law but I has to pass inspection... A dealer license is a dealer license. They have to adhere by the rules...

I drive a gti but it's newer and pretty expensive to fix. If you were gonna go as cheap as saying id say a Toyota or Honda...

A Honda civic makes a great DD Idk if I could ever drive around in a Honda though... I know the lemon law n stuff but what if they fixed it up so it passes inspection and I can't see or tell anythings wrong with it. Then 6 months down the road it breaks.... That could happen from anywhere I guess it is a USED car.

The higher the mileage the high the chances... thats the way I see it with that stuff... as far as it being a Honda... Who cares? If people really care that much tell them about your Fbody ha... or better yet show it to them one day

Our shop(used to sell gas) sold many used cars without any problems. As long as you get it checked out by somebody you know I don't see any problems buying it.

get a car fox!!!! But seriously have it checked by a second person/other local garage! then youll know. if they see signs of leaks starting tranny slipping issues/bad clutch(Auto-5 Speed?) and other normal check points. the typical inspection doesnt really go that far. so it just passing inspection just means no engine light and tight front suspension.

Always get it checked out by someone else. Made that mistake 2 times buying from small dealers never again. All small dealers cars I purchase go to a mechanic.
When I sold my truck I sold it to a small dealer. My buddy dented the bumper pretty good with his flatbed the night before i sold it. Out of my embarrassment for bringing the guy a crashed truck i straight uP told him that I would take 500 off. His response, "that won't be necessary, well just hammer it back...". The trucks still for sale at a 5 grand mark up....
You really never know wih some of these fuckers is what I'm getting at.

I would have no problem buying from a gas station. Hyundai makes a great car. And cheap used to boot. Honda holds their value to well for a 5+ year old car. The Hyundai is nearly as reliable and much cheaper used..... even parts are less. I have a dealers lic (I do not sell cars) I just go to the auction every now and then and it is not rare to see a low milage (under 50k miles) Accent or Kia REO (basicely same car) for $1500-$2000. If you would like I can get you the wholesale pricing a car sells for at auction (to help you negotiate).

i'm in the market for a 4dr 4x4 small truck, s10/colorado, canyon/sanoma, or Frontier.
I've been searching around and found a few at some of these (gas station dealers). but they do seem to have a good amount of the DD compacts. dealing with the thing I have now is going to set me back too far to repair I'd rather spend that $ on something better that runs and needs only the basics.

UPDATE. Test drove a 5-speed 1999 Toyota corolla. Had 96,000 miles on it. Mechanically it was good, engine sounded fine, transmission shifted fine, Clutch was just replaced and felt good. Everything else was horrible the seats were all horribly stained, the speedo didn't work, a dash panel was lost, clock was punched out, fan didn't work... And I asked him what he wanted just for the hell of it and he said 4400 LMAO! I was going to test drive a 4.door civic stick but I got sold... I'm looking at the Saturn SC2 looks decent, interior looks a hell of a lot better than a corolla. How reliable are they?

The Saturn's are pretty reliable. I've had my sl2 for some time now. Just regular service and some small issues. I bought mine with 120k and now it has 170k on it

Don't get an auto Saturn though....
The Auto Transmission implodes ~ 100K.

Yea steer clear of the corolla and any around that year. Loaded with little nickle dime issues. Brakes under sized/wear fast. Shitty/expensive exhaust. Suspension is terrible. Get a saturn. They aren't sought after don't hold there value and really should over the corollas and civics. Its a far better car with out the hype.

The sc2 have the same engine as the sl2? if so, mine had almost 250k when I sold it to a friend who drive it for a couple years before he was rear ended... Keep the oil changed and dont let it over heat and they are hard to kill

I have a 2001 4 banger camry as a DD right and it feels so friggen slow. Makes no power pretty much anywhere and being an auto sometimes it won't downshift when i want it...I got dusted by a friggen work van a few months ago... Even when i test drove that 5 speed corolla I could feel a big difference in acceleration Haha kinda sad. I always do 3k oil changes on all my cars. That's one thing I'm a big believer in, is not to go over.

Most modern cars easily go at least 5k miles between oil changes with no issues. The 3k mile rule is outdated. I run synthetic in my Civic and go 12k between changes, and lab analysis shows it's still in pretty good shape even then.

I've heard that too, frankly I doubt there is much truth to it but you could always go to bobistheoilguy.com and do some research. My Civic runs 0W20 which only comes in synthetic so no such dilemma there.

Yeah newer cars, my 96 Bonneville i had was a 3k car, my 01 Camry is a 3k car. My fathers 08 lexus goes between 6-10k before the oil change light comes on. When i GF bought her new 2010 escape oil didn't have to change hers until around 12k into it...crazy.

From what i heard if you have been using Regular oil its whole life then switch to synthetic oil, it can create oil leaks... Something about how it cleans better or something. Idk if its true or not, someone on here should know.
Anyways im Test driving a 1999 SC2 Two door 5-speed this week. Thing has 133k miles on it they are asking 3,000. Thing is pretty much fully loaded even has a sunroof. :Funny_Smiley:
