Well aside from the 9" and TH400 I've also got a complete -8AN fuel system; all braided lines from tank to carb, got a BG 850 speed demon as well. Got my SFI flexplate, some drag shocks, Permacool Maxi cool trans cooler and fan setup, Mallory 3 port return regulator. UMI TQ arm should be here sometime next week as well.
Heres some pics:

Comp Engineering shocks:
http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/200/247/247-2700.jpg
Seem like good shocks but my biggest gripe is they didnt come with the lower nut to mount the bolt to mount to the rearend, had to go to a hardware store and get it.
I also spent some time playing with the MSD Digital 6 plus box and installing it somehwere I can actually use all the controls from. So I mounted it on the side of the center console. I also pulled the stock shifter out and modified the plate that bolts to the floor to accept the Hurst Quarter Stick I have. Yes I know the cars a mess and a mouse was living under my console at one point!

Just about done...
Not too pleased about the carb feed line, all the fittings are -6AN and then the line in between the bowls is a 5/16" line. I looked everywhere and couldnt find a size for the line. Waiting for 2 fittings and then I'm going to use some extra lines and make it a true -6AN line.

I own both carbs. The red one is a Quick Fuel Q750 and the other one is a Barry Grant Speed Demon 850. I'll be using the 850 for now while the 750 gets sent out(new boosters). Eventually I want to dyno them against each other.

Carbs have different "maps" as well except you hafta tune them by hand lol
Demons are ok, I got this one for a really good price so we'll see. Demons had a lot of quality control issues a few years ago. If I had my choice though I would use the Q750, but it needs work.

Cam swap, the cam that was in there was spec'ed for a 355 and was falling off. It was also spec'ed for a heavy nitrous motor and was running like crap. After talking with a couple builders we agreed that it was the cam after checking numerous other things. The car drove fine but if I layed into it, it wouldnt move for shit.
84ta406
07-28-2010, 09:51 PM
Cam bearings are junk. Not bad for 1972 originals.
I have no luck with this fuckin things. Gonna part it out.

SLP IROC-Z
07-28-2010, 10:05 PM
id prob just say f it and throw a cam in there, maybe its the pics but they dont seem that bad. if copper isnt showin and there not polished in spots id debur those scrapes and put a different cam in. atleast you could enjoy it for the rest of the summer. i remember i putting an LT1 cam in my 305 years ago and caught that bearing with the cam gear and scraped it like that. motor ran great until i tried 20/50 in it and Fd the lower end bearings.
84ta406
07-28-2010, 10:10 PM
Yeah been thinking of options, with 10w30 in there I have 60psi cold and goes down to like 50psi hot before.
I just dont want a new cam to go in with tighter clearances and hurt things. I got the cam originally from steve so it was used. The marks feel pretty deep though so I dunno. I could do just the front bearing but I dont want to throw everything else off.
Just not having much luck anymore.

I'd just toss a set of cam bearings in it and call it a day. With everything else k wouldn't give up on it now.
On another note, how much for the 9" now lol?
Cammed 305, Minor bolt ons..
take that outta the sig then????
I would redo the bearings and try again.
make sure you use the correct break in oil and break in procedure!
I always over lube the cam and bearings with the assembly grease.
the front bearing looks like the lobe or gear messed it up but the zinc that is 1/2 gone looks like it got wiped out from no additive in the break in oil ?
(the bearings didnt come from a rebuild kit did they?
(reason i ask is I had a set of bearing go on me from a rebuild kit I got from PAW years ago and turned out to be a chinese brand bearing)
throw in a set of clevite bearings and be done with it!
correct me if im wrong but doesnt the cam bearing oil hole position supposed to be at 12 o clock!!!!!!!
84ta406
07-29-2010, 09:32 PM
Those are the stock bearings from 1972 lol I've never done cam bearings on this block yet.
And yes its a 406 not a 305. I'll take it out of my sig just for you Harry lol
definatley get the bearings changed and use good clevite bearings.
it can be done in the car but I would be concerned with the crank bearings aswell.
how was the oil pressure on that motor?
btw i have a bearing tool if ya need it .
ill have to remember who got it now though.

I knew the bearings were OK last time. Oil pressure was great 60psi cold, 50psi hot.
If you have the tool that would be great! I'm not sure when I'm doing them though. Motor is already torn apart so I'm just gonna yank it out and do them. Probably gonna do a new bottom end or something using some parts from Ohio crank.

My heads flow 286's cfm @ .600 lift which is why I kept it under .600
My old cam was .586/.562 and this one is .562/.580... The only thing bigger is the duration really and I went higher since the car was falling off very early. I NEEDED a cam swap to get away from the 113LSA/113ICL on the old cam which was a nitrous grind.

Pretty much done for now. Toss up between putting the old V-belt on or trying my hand at the serpentine setup I have. Only draw back is I didnt get bolts with the serpentine, DOH!
Other than that, everything went smooth, lubed the shit out of the cam with the Pro lube as well as the lifter rollers. Had to resort to the dot to dot method, really wish I could have degree it in but no one has a wheel I could borrow.

dot to dot will be fine for now. Hoepfully get some $ and I'll actually degree it. Luckily the cam is built well enough for it to be off a couple degrees anyways.
ILuvPizzaTimes10
03-30-2011, 12:39 AM
the whole point of degreeing a cam is that you are just asuring that the dot to dot on your timing set is correct. then if you have an Adjustable? timing set you can move the cam from there. i have rarely seen a point in degreeing a cam unless i was putting a motor together with Cheap/Used parts.

Well I graduated wyotech top of my class, won some fancy awards as well and earning a few ASE certs. Since I've been home I've been working a shit ton but in my free time I get over to my dads place where the car is and have been wrenching on it.
While porting the heads I managed to go through the pushrod wall due to some really bad core shift in the heads. I ended up drilling out the pushrod tubes to .500 and putting . 014" brass tubes in to seal them.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/261340_10150251433114410_501264409_7323319_6479150 _n.jpg
The port work I've very happy with. I was able to get 280cfm out of them at .600 lift and 200cfm on the exhaust side. Along with new cam and eventually the ported manifold it should deff. make some steam. I only went out to a Fel-pro 1205 gasket too, leaving a lot of room for a 1206 to gain more flow. All this through a set of 2.02/ 1.6 valves on a 4.000" fixture.
End product so far..

Idles at 1000 in Park and 800 in gear. Timing is at 34* for the time being. Got it up on the converter once and it was smooth as butter. Couldnt be happier!

I dont mind working on it honestly. I replaced them all in car a couple years ago except for that one due to the headers so its my own fault, already got the old one out lastnight so I should be good to go. I hardly work on or even see the car really, I live in fitchburg, cars in worcester at my dads. The shitty part is, the car felt better than it ever has and felt smooth as butter on the t-brake.
It's not so much the worst luck as it is buying peoples beat up shit. I bought my heads a couple years ago from a buddy of mine and threw them on. All they had was like 50 mins of run time and about 6 miles of driving from me. When I took them to school, the springs were junk, tested 260 @ 1.2" when my new cam calls for 343. The springs were floated so many times they were digging and some had gone through the shims and a couple started to dig into heads itself. I had a couple valves that didnt match so I had to buy all new hardware, new valves etc. Lesson learned is to stop buying peoples used shit. Only buying new from here on out.

Well a buddy of mine offered me a stupid amount of money for my old Sportsman II heads. Something about a lot of nitrous and a grudge race motor lol so I sold them to him and shipped em on down to NC.
I went out and picked up some mildly ported Brodix Track 1 heads, they flow ~300cfm @.600 for now. Got them mocked up on the motor today. Still need to buy some new gaskets(1206's) and some new springs since theyre currently setup for a solid roller. Also need to port my manifold heavily since its TINY and hold the motor back substantially. The last Vic jr. I ported made over 30hp more on the dyno. Hopefully finished soon. I can honestly say I am happy now though :)

Head studs! Only mocked up for now, I need to run a tap through the bolt holes to clean them out. Already have new head gaskets here.

Hopefully in the next month or so. I'm moving March 1st back to worcester so I'll be closer to work and my dads so I can work on it more. I also need to finish porting my manifold, thats been very slow.

Am I supposed to update this?
Well took out the motor to try and fix a few leaks that I couldnt do while in the car. Did some more work to the motor, like headstuds, Brodix Aluminum heads, new ported Edelbrock victor manifold, locked out distributor, new water pump, fixed some of the wiring and plumbing.
Anyways here ya go I guess..

Hopefully soon, its been way too long since this thing has moved under its own power. Also found out the hard way that myy ignition problem was caused by using the wrong carbon bushing in the cap.. made so much heat it MELTED the cap to the bushing. Almost there though, just keep plucking away at it

congrats man but why lock out the distributor on a street motor
that intake looks nice on the motor .
84ta406
07-23-2012, 02:33 AM
Ive locked out the distributor on a few street motors and it worked well. Some motors actually perform better down low with the added timing. Ive done dyno testing to check this as well.
Thanks DAWG, didnt clean it or anything lol
84ta406
07-23-2012, 06:39 PM
Oh yeah forgot to mention the MSD digital 6 plus bux has a built in starter saver that retards timing 20* until it reaches a certain RPM so the locked out distributor will work good I hope

Well I suppose I should update this a little bit. Pulled the old 406 sbc out before the winter. Stripped the 5.3 down to its bare essentials.
https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1.0-9/r90/1456699_10152039258184410_326350974_n.jpg

I grabbed a 4L80 flexplate and spacer, nothing else should be needed to bolt the TH400 to the LSx engine.
https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/1454723_10152034468044410_386013789_n.jpg
Also spent some time figuring out how I was going to drop the engine into the chassis. Saw some bolt on adapter mounts online and the light bulb went off in my head. Decided to build my own, after taking all the measurements heres what I came up with. After bolting them on and measuring bolt locations its within 1/16" of stock location.
https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/p417x417/1471813_10152004633314410_617771092_n.jpg
The next step was figuring out how to get the car back on the ground after the rearend was sold. Talked to John (MY84z) and he was looking to sell the Moser 9" again. So I bought it back :) Then I realized I needed some LCA's and PHB again, found some mint Wolfe ones for sale, bought em, and waited and waited.. never showed up. Went through a big hassle but the guy eventually sent my money back. Found some UMI ones on ls1tech and grabbed em!

As of now the swap and everything has been stalled with the crappy weather and the car being in a non heated garage. Hopefully get everything settled in soon!

No clue, trying to stick to my cards right now. Put the 5.3 in, get it tuned and go from there.

It was very fun behind the 406, hoping the converter doesnt make the 5.3 feel like a dog. 4500 stall.

Forgot to add that I am keeping the engine with EFI, so I sent the Harness to Furches Performance in Westfield, MA. Hes turning the harness into a stand alone unit, plug and play. Also keeping the DBW so I have acquired a DBW and TAC module. Brandon does some amazing work and Ill post more pictures when it is finished. Sent the PCM to Vengeance Racing to have them flash and tune it for the swap, getting rid of VATS and all that happy jazz.
