Alright the previous owner and I have always used Mobil1 5w30, recently I have been noticing a little more oil consumption, and its burning some oil in the higher rpms. I've read that Mobil1 5w30 is thinner than other 30 weights. I've read good things about German Castrol 0w-30. Just curious and looking for some opinions of what you guys think I should use and hopefully Don will chime in. Oh and the car is a 2000 z28 with just a lid, full exhaust, and dyno tune. Thanks in advance guys!

i strongly dissagree with the castrol 0w30 in our climate. Again thats ME talking and My opinion only. But i would run 10w 30. it should take care of SOME of the ticks with these motors as well. and try not to think of it as weight, but as viscosity. the higher the number the MORE viscous the fluid.
http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/
so in this article. 0w Isnt a bad idea. it FLOWS better at colder temps(IE) colder engine. but to my experience it doesn't LUBRICATE as well at that grade. again my opinion Really and choose what you want.
and i would stop using mobil 1. they have downgraded to a tier 3 oil, castrol is still a tier 1 last i checked.

I def. plan on stopping using the mobil1. I'm definitely thinking about using a Castrol synthetic.

always had stable oil pressures with castrol. other manufacturers like mobil 1 no. warm idle psi would drop quite a bit. again LT1 so different pump.

I def. noticed my oil pressure hasnt been to stable when I get stuck in traffic using the mobil 1

I've used nothing but Castrol 10w-30 and have had no problems.

Castrol Syntec 0W30 is actually a pretty thick oil despite it's rated viscosity. I think I have a chart saved on my computer that shows the actual viscosity of many different brands and weights of oil, I'll look for it when I get home. People who have run the German Castrol in LS1s and had it analyzed have had very good results. If you want more in depth info on oil check out bobistheoilguy.com

5w30 or 10w30. i doubt your tolerances are as loose as mine and i run 5w30

I think I might give the German Castrol a try. Thanks for all the replies guys

I use castrol syntec since my car came from factory with it i use 5-30 or 10-40 depending on what one of my cars. Try a 10-40 see how it does

I was just looking at the parts store and the only synthetic castrol that they had was castrol edge with syntec. While we're at it what filters do you guys use?
My84Z

Yes edge with syntec is the castrol i use. I also use the ac delco filter.

I try and stick to fram x gaurd only for the ease of pulling it off. If not that I've used delco

Fram is the worst filter in the world

Most of our builds here get mobile 1 0w-40 and a gm filter.

Bosch and Purolator Pureone are very good filters at a reasonable price. Mobil One and K&N are also good but pricey. Anything but Fram is ok though. Some good features to look for are high efficiency (>99%), nitrile anti drainback valve, and lots of filter media.

I've been running Mobil1 10w-30 synthetic in my car because previously it was running 5w-30 and noticed that warm idle pressure after about 2500 miles would drop to about 30-35 psi whereas when fresh it'd hit about 40 psi. I recommend either the Wix, K&N filter with the wrench off nut at the bottom or the recommended Mobil1 filter.
Sorry Demon, but I got to side with John there, Fram is about the worst filter imo that you can ever use on a car. Can't remember where it was that I seen it, but on a comparison chart, fram was actually the worst filter tested.

I know fram sucks, but I forgot to say xtended guard. I normally would go with pureolator or delco filters that are usually associated with the 5qt deals at Advanced.
I do notice the oil gets dirtier quicker with the regular fram filters, but I've not seen reason to worry with the xtended guard. wish more companies used that grip though.

i bought a filtger cup to a 3/8 ratchet. have not had a problem getting one on or off ever. the K&N can suck it though. that nut bullshit sucks! well its RIGHT next to my LT's so it gets hot.

who needs a grip or a nut, get a damn filter wrench!

Is the Extended Guard the one with teflon in it? Throw that shit away and get a Purolator Pureone, it's got the sandpaper-like grip texture. I get them off by hand every time.

I use mobil 1 10w30, and I put in the lucas oil oil stabilizer, its unbelievable how much the stabilizer quiets down the valvetrain, And I use the K+N filter, and I LOVE THE NUT on the bottom, I barely have to jack my car up to change the oil, just reach under with the wrench, break the filter free, and take it off by hand, that simple.

I don't even jack my car up anymore, i just lay down by drivers side tire and can reach both filter and oil drain plug.
I usually use a wix filter and cheap 10-30. I use an oil filter wrench to get it loose. every 3k

it sits for a LONG time. So time is the same as miles. and every 2-3 months or so it gets dumped.

^same here. as much as I love driving it, just going back and forth to work doesn't do it justice when it's only a 12mile trip.

True, I change my oil before I put my car away for winter, and when i take it out, it maybe has 50 miles on it MAYBE haha

My oil gets dumped about every 5-6 weeks due to the mileage that goes into the daily commute back and forth from work.
120ish miles per day x 5-6 days a week = 600-720 per week
Sometimes I'll cheat a bit and roll it up to 4k between oil changes, Otherwise I'd be doing an oil change every month.

With all those highway miles 4K is more than safe, you could easily do 5K even with conventional oil and have no issues. Try having an oil anlysis done on a sample after 4K, I bet it will still be mint.

Synthetic oil is more a time oil, not mileage. They say 6-8 months. My truck gets changed 2 times a year.Pretty much every 8-9k miles.

Thanks man, just read up on it a bit more through Mobil 1's website. Up to 15k! That means I could almost go 6 months or so without an oil change lol.
Here's what has been said through Mobil 1's website:
Question:
Recommended Oil Change Intervals for Mobil™ Motor Oils
You state that your oils are for 5,000, 15,000 miles, but what are the months before a change is due?
Answer:
We recommend you follow the oil and filter change frequencies shown in your owner's manual. Generally, this means changing your oil every six months when using Mobil Super™, Mobil Super High Mileage and Mobil Super Synthetic motor oils, and every year when using Mobil 1™ or Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic oils.
------------------------------------------------
Question:
If I go longer between oil change intervals, do I need to change my oil filter more frequently? Or do I need a special filter?
Answer:
Continue to change your oil filter when you change your engine oil. Special filters or more frequent oil filter changes are not required;, however, some low quality filters may not be capable of protecting your engine throughout an extended oil change interval.
Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters provide outstanding protection during longer oil change intervals - up to 15,000 miles of Guaranteed Protection when combined with fully synthetic motor oils. Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters are designed to remove more impurities (99.9 percent Multi-Pass Efficiency Test rating) and hold more contaminants (22.5 grams capacity) than conventional oil filters, which make them ideal candidates when oil drain intervals are extended. All new car warranties remain in effect when Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters are used. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals.

Parts stores run specials all the time on Mobil 1, 5 quarts and a filter for like $33. I run it in my daily driver, just went 14,000 miles and had a sample analyzed and it looked fine.

Usually Advance, but Autozone has them too, just keep an eye out and you'll find it. Advance also has a deal right now on Castrol Edge.

Autozone usually always has a 5 quarts and some sort of oil filter deal. I usually get the German Castrol and a filter for some other car. Usually it's some real basic oil filter. I pick up a bunch of Napa Gold filters for my Camaro separately
