Well guys I guess some things aren't meant to be. Driving home from work and the motor shot a rod through the oil pan. Didn't even put 10 miles on it. If anyone wants a clean roller I will entertain offers.

Yeah man that blows. After all that. Were you beating on it or just driving and pop.

smokinss
01-30-2013, 02:10 AM
Didn't get a chance to beat it at all. Was a little worried about the oil pressure. Cold idle was 40ish. Warm idle was 30 give or take. My wife's Camaro idles at 50 hot

Man sorry to here, i know it sux after all the work put into it.

Ouch. I've had those years too. One season I went through 3 motors in my 68, one of which was a fresh rebuild that locked up solid in under a minute of run time. Needless to say I learned to build my own motors after that ;)

Don't sell it, you'll kick yourself later. You own it outright and have a garage. Put it away and cool off for a season. Make a game plan and hit it hard next winter. That's always seemed to work for me over the years every time I get fed up with my 68.
You got the wife's car to tool around it. Buff it up and have fun. Worst case "borrow" the nitrous out of yours :D

smokinss
01-30-2013, 03:43 PM
Well as of right now the car is for sale. Unless the guy I bought the motor from come through then its going bye bye. I am in worse shape now then when the last motor blew up. This put a huge finacial hole in my pocket.

Man that really blows!!

Although if it blew up that quick it does seem like a build issue. I know parts due fail but typically there's some warranty for complete failure like that without any real abuse or non-typical break in.

Sorry to hear it though:sFun_bangdesk:

32k mile short block out of a Corvette. Stock bottom end.

Whats the bearings look like? Kinda curious. The oil psi is a bit low but Ive never seen a motor go with that pressure still.

I say put a SBC in it lol, cheaper to build.

Formula413
02-02-2013, 03:55 AM
FWIW my warm oil pressure at idle with 10w30 is about 20 psi and mine runs like a champ. I can't imagine 40 psi is a problem.

ILuvPizzaTimes10
02-02-2013, 01:17 PM
ls1-lt1 ls1 needs a lot more oil pressure at idle then a classic sbc/lt1. oil pump o ring look ok?

smokinss
02-02-2013, 10:55 PM
Put in a new one at the time of assembly. Haven't even looked at the fucking thing. Just pulled connecting rod out of the oil pan. Might have something coming my way. Need to pull my motor back out first.

ILuvPizzaTimes10
02-21-2013, 01:54 AM
arp bolts for the whole engine?

smokinss
02-21-2013, 11:54 AM
I already had the arp crank bolt and flex plate bolts. Adding the rod bolts and head bolts.

ILuvPizzaTimes10
02-23-2013, 01:54 AM
Nice! so whats the word on yours why the failure?

smokinss
02-23-2013, 12:50 PM
Still not sure. We have a couple ideas

1. The rod could of been tweaked from the get go. It did come out of a lingenfelter TT vette with 8lbs of boost.
2. I noticed that when I took off the oil pan a couple of the main bolts seemed loose. Not sure if it was before/after the damage
3. Rod cap possibly loose.

Picking up my new motor today!!!:nanawrench:

able to reuse the heads? or did the piston hit it?

smokinss
02-24-2013, 08:27 PM
Nope. Pistons hit. Its OK though instead of the 853 I have the 241 castings which are supposedly better. Kind of sucks because I am out the money for the head work

ILuvPizzaTimes10
02-24-2013, 08:54 PM
cracked or just dented? brodix offers head repair.

smokinss
02-24-2013, 09:44 PM
Not spending that money on a stock head. Plus they only do there own heads now.

Formula413
02-24-2013, 09:52 PM
At least they're worth a few bucks as scrap.

ILuvPizzaTimes10
02-25-2013, 01:56 AM
well that sucks they only do there own!!! and i kinda see your point. i just didnt know what work you had done IE port work or what not to make it worth it. too bad a good decking couldnt fix them and you could sell em and recoup some cost.

smokinss
02-26-2013, 04:48 PM
They were decked and cleaned up with a valve job. Two of the chambers took the damage. No biggie. Making good progress. Engine, trans, exhaust is all in

smokinss
02-27-2013, 03:16 PM
Yeah I am trying too. Didnt get much done yesterday. Once the little guy woke up from his nap forget it. Managed to get one converter bolt in and tighten up the exhaust clamps.

smokinss
02-28-2013, 12:56 PM
Well I got a decent amount done last night. Converter bolted up, starter in, driveshaft in, O2 sensors in and shifter linkage in and adjusted. Just need to button up some wiring underneath and then it is time to put on all of the front accessories and intake.

02-28-2013, 10:46 PM
awesome sounds like any day now.

smokinss
03-01-2013, 12:40 AM
Yup. Got some more done tonight. Finished up the wiring underneath. Got the power steering back on, water pump and alternator. Just need plugs, wires, coils, intake, radiator, fuel rail and put fluids in it

Thanks guys. Yeah I definitely am excited about it. I did have a little issue with my intake. The motor was popping out the exhaust under load. Turns out I had a vacuum leak. I pulled the intake off and resealed it. Seems OK now!!

Most likely the same. Didn't really change anything

smokinss
03-08-2013, 06:48 PM
Took it out last night for a good ride. Air has been cold down here. Low 40s at night. Car seems to be running well. Lets hope it stays that way

ILuvPizzaTimes10
03-10-2013, 03:33 AM
Hell Yeah!!!!

smokinss
03-10-2013, 12:07 PM
Well it fell victim to the stuck pressure relief valve in the oil pump. Had ZERO oil pressure when I went to start it. Took it apart yesterday and found the problem. Also looks like the guy used my old oil pump. I drained the oil and there wasn't any metal on the plug or in the oil.

smokinss
03-10-2013, 06:59 PM
All fixed. Put in a stock pump and it has great pressure again

Send me your PayPal info!!!

I was kind of like wtf when I saw the old pump. I looked at the pressure relief valve and it had some wear on it. Probably why it got hung up.
