View Full Version : I really need to do something about my driveway!

I spent 4 hours playing in the mud this morning. The trailer had the Z in it so trailer + Z is almost 6,000 pounds.

A winch chained to a tree finally got it out.

That sucks David, why do you have to cross the yard like that? I'm drawing a blank on how the yards set up lol

DavidS

The house had a 3 car garage on one side and a 3 horse/1-tack room stable on the other side.

I changed the horse side into a place for the camaros. Old picture:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/pratt1/131Case-restoration/IMG_20130602_131939_870.jpg

The 3 camaros are there now, but I never did anything about making a driveway. It's muddy in front and I pulled the trailer in close so that I wouldn't bury the Z like I did to the 68.

I got in with no problem, but with the weight of the car, I didn't make it out so easy.

Oh, I didn't realize that it never had a drive way of sorts. Always figured it was attached like the garage. You gonna put in a real drive way out back now I'm guessing? Lol

Definitely at some point, but I'm not sure when. It's a great house but when I joke about it being a "money pit", I'm not really joking. HA HA.

My first quote at fixing the regular 1/8th mile driveway came back at $55k. I'm gonna need a few more quotes!

The first quote was for taking out the existing driveway and repaving it. They left out all the drainage stuff i asked for so I don't think the quote amount will go down.

It's definitely a money drain pit. For now, I have to slow down all my projects.

I ditched my all season radials cuz they had no traction, Maybe you should do the same.
55k to do your driveway is really high?
about 10 to 12k to do the new section and 10 to 15k to repave existing.
After I seen your existing drive I would repave over it?
It wasn't bad at all?
heres the guys that did my drive 10 yrs ago. https://www.facebook.com/AndrighettiAndSonsInc

they did my drive for $4700.00 and it was dirt gravel mix back then lol.

If you want a second quote - Ayotte Brothers (http://www.ayottebrotherswindsor.com/) out of South Windsor

They did an excellent job on our driveway - Widened from 8 to 12 ft - 100 Ft main section where they had to completely remove old pavement and go down 18" to regrade plus 20 x 20 section of brand new area - $5K total if I remember:dance-1:

Worth a call if you are shopping it out!

Thanks!

I remembered some early on discussions on the Driveway - but couldn't remember if I had provided their info....

They were definitely good to us - I was "shooting the Sh*&*T" with the owner for quite some time when they came out to quote the job, and they were good about updating us on scheduling and work plans as needed.

For the size of the job you need - it's definitely worth multiple quotes as even for our driveway we got a wide range of pricing (and some higher ones didn't even include all the details we knew we wanted) :bird:

Good Luck with it!!:gears:

Hey Dawg,

Andrighetti never showed up. Not sure why.

I've got Ayotte coming Wed morning for an estimate.

I've got Maglieri Construction and Paving coming out sometime during the week but for some reason they just want to work on the the estimate themselves and not talk to me beforehand.

Lester Ayotte was here this morning to work on the quote. He is the first guy to actually listen to what I was saying about all the ponding water. He was real specific on important details like directions of curtain drains.

It's going to be a few days for the quote, but I'm hoping it's reasonable.

Yikes - That does seem like it's high - I really thought they were reasonable on ours - but not so much on a bigger job?:panic::lightingzapA:

Dawg - I'm thinking that 15 -18 is low though - I mean ours was $5k for 1600 Sq. Ft - with only a portion of that being torn out and regraded - and there's more size and options being looked at here - so I would expect some $$ but yeah the quoted amount is a bit shocking.....:sign0165:

DavidS
07-22-2014, 12:48 PM
Update...after 5 quotes, and two no-shows, Ayotte was the 2nd highest bidder but they're the only one's that understood the amount of drainage I wanted.

I'm going to have two-thirds of the driveway done now, and the rest in a year or two.

Adding two drain lines in front of the Camaro side of the garage and drainage on both sides of the main driveway gives me about a 1/4 mile of drainage.

Some companies who quoted didn't want to talk to me about drainage or told me I didn't need that much drainage. They wouldn't be the one's stuck living in the mud bog though.

Also, it's things like having geo-textile fabric encapsulate the drainage pipe and the rocks in the French drain that made me go with Ayotte. They really know their drainage & driveways!

Nice! Too bad I don't live closer to ya, Im a heavy equipment operator and I do drainage like this aaalllll the time. And yes the fabric makes all the difference in the world. That way your drain pipe doesn't get clogged up with silt over the years. Looks like quite the little project!

KB93z28

Also instead of paving in front of your Camaro garage, (idk if you did already or not) you could always just have somebody come in and strip the loam down to the sub base and then just put down reground asphalt, much cheaper. I think that stuff works great, doesn't get dusty like gravel or reground concrete does and the more you drive on it, it actually almost turns into paved asphalt.

The drainage took a lot of time to finish. They had a pretty good size crew of 5 to 6 guys and it was about 5 days.

If you lived closer, I definitely would have asked you to quote it!

They are not paving in front of the Camaro garage but they are going to prep it for pavers.

I've been looking for pavers that look like cobblestone. That will be a project for next year. The mason that put in the steps and walkway recommended Techno-Bloc but I haven't researched it yet.

Material cost for the 1,900 square foot area that would get pavers:

below is $14.25/sq ft so approx $27,000.
http://www.monarchstoneinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/05-Granite-5x5-5x8.jpg

Unilock makes a cobblestone paver called the Courtstone. It looks good and it's $8.49/sq ft so approx $16,000.

Yea I mean we do our own patches if were doing street work and after about an hour or so we let traffic drive right over it and it holds up fine. Maybe a parked car could leave indents where the tires were if it sat there long enough....who knows....:idontknow:

DavidS
08-08-2014, 01:15 AM
I was thinking that maybe they do a better job packing the pavement down with town and state roads with heavier rollers?

ILuvPizzaTimes10
08-08-2014, 04:09 AM
i think its the mix they use. driveways settle/use more tar roads dont settle as mush use more rock/gravel but are more porous. they do that so the road isnt closed for a week but also why the roads frost heave and crack.

It's been a while but I now have a cobblestone section of the driveway.

Backstory:
--------------
15 years ago I worked for a German company and the president of the company took me to a town called Esslingen and showed me parts of the town built around 800 bc.

Some parts of the town were not as old, but many parts looked like this:

http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l604/1969Z/2015-Oct/esslingen-cobblestone.jpg

Cobblestone streets everywhere.

New Story:
--------------
In 2012, while I was buying a horrific foreclosure, Jeff68 suggested going with cobblestone on the driveway.

It took a long time, but I finally have a driveway that is part cobblestone. I took this picture today:
