Well first off I have a new part time job working at a machine shop, learning how to use all the tools of the trade for engine building and that has led me to revisiting an experiment I've was going to do once before. Since I have a plethora of available 4.8/5.3 parts I am thinking of assembling one or two 5.0L LSX engines and putting them into hock as spares for the T/A. I'm thinking high revving, high compression motors probably into the 430+HP range and VERY budget friendly and I am willing to bet wickedly durable. Only hurdle I am running into right now is finding pistons, which probably have to be custom made, everything else is readily available. It will be a slow process as money is tight but with the machining tools to do the block and crank will really help out budget wise.

Cool! I'm curious to how well it'll come out. Any clue what heads you'll use? Compression?

Either factory 799 heads or something like patriot 5.3 heads, probably be 11.25-11.5:1 C/R. I'm sure it won't be as powerful as my 5.7, but it will cost less then half the price to build one. Hell if the Aussies can get 850HP out of a 5.0 I should be able to get at least 430, lol!

lol them crazy fuckin aussies.
So can you get me a good deal on some machine work?
I think you should shoot for 13:1 lol

well you could use a 6.0 block and a 4.3 crank and make a 327 then use a set of L92 heads it would suck on the low end but I bet you could rev the piss out of it

Would make more power but with the added cost I doubt nick would. He gets those 4.8's and 5.3's CHEAP

isnt the 5.3 and 4.8 the same block???? i think the 5.3 just has 9mm more stroke in it

i wish i owned AN ls cause i would buy a few of those from you. but they are kinda hard to put into an LT

all the cranks are the same 4.8 and up to 5.7 its the bore they changed. this makes sence and would be pretty cool if made right. my only question is what kind of R/S angles will you be getting into with a funky sroke/bore to achieve a 5.0 on an Ls platform. safe to spray or boost? that would be something.

ehhhhh wrong Pizza, 4.8 and 5.3 have the same bore (3.780"), boomer is right, the 4.8 crank is de-stroked 9MM (3.270" vs 3.622"). the 5.3, 5.7, 6.0 cranks are the same and they all use the same rods. It may not come to exactly a 5.0L(probably 4.9 something) but it will just be a .030 over 4.8. My only fear for spray and boost would be the rods and pistons, forged rods are readily available, just need to have pistons made if I can't find off the shelf ones.

Ahh ok i thought even the 4.8 was same stroke. i stand corrected.

The biggest hurdles are a light/strong connecting rod and a very stable valvetrain.People have been building setups like this for awhile and it is common to rev to 8500rpm.

Don't know if I am brave enough for 8500 :). Would be fun though!

some good shaft mounted rockers and push rods a set of killer rods and forged pistons I would do it LOL

decent amount of $$$ tho boom boom i dn 8500rpms is highhhh

That is hilarious.
Batman this build sounds real interesting! I like it, but how cheap is REALLY cheap? I like seeing machines make engine parts woooooot keep us updated :D I can design the pistons for you in solidworks then just give you the sketches to machine them sound good? haha

I'm guessing it will be about $3000 or so when all is said and done for the longblock, depending on heads. A far cry from the $7500.00 mine cost
That's damn cheap holy cow.

well that will get you to about 7500RPM, lol. add another grand if you want to go for Don's 8500 goal for a bullet proof valvetrain
