is that car cursed or something? damn!
|
Yep, I'm sick of it. It'll be getting parted out this winter dont worry.
|
buy a 4th gen! lol
|
why even deal with a 305?
part it out and get a 350 or better. most of those parts will work on a 350 block. |

I'd just toss a set of cam bearings in it and call it a day. With everything else k wouldn't give up on it now.
On another note, how much for the 9" now lol? |
Cammed 305, Minor bolt ons..
take that outta the sig then???? I would redo the bearings and try again. make sure you use the correct break in oil and break in procedure! I always over lube the cam and bearings with the assembly grease. the front bearing looks like the lobe or gear messed it up but the zinc that is 1/2 gone looks like it got wiped out from no additive in the break in oil ? (the bearings didnt come from a rebuild kit did they? (reason i ask is I had a set of bearing go on me from a rebuild kit I got from PAW years ago and turned out to be a chinese brand bearing) throw in a set of clevite bearings and be done with it! correct me if im wrong but doesnt the cam bearing oil hole position supposed to be at 12 o clock!!!!!!! |
Those are the stock bearings from 1972 lol I've never done cam bearings on this block yet.
And yes its a 406 not a 305. I'll take it out of my sig just for you Harry lol |
definatley get the bearings changed and use good clevite bearings.
it can be done in the car but I would be concerned with the crank bearings aswell. how was the oil pressure on that motor? btw i have a bearing tool if ya need it . ill have to remember who got it now though. http://s.shld.net/is/image/Sears/009...sm=0.9,0.5,0,0 |
I knew the bearings were OK last time. Oil pressure was great 60psi cold, 50psi hot.
If you have the tool that would be great! I'm not sure when I'm doing them though. Motor is already torn apart so I'm just gonna yank it out and do them. Probably gonna do a new bottom end or something using some parts from Ohio crank. |
New cam, Comp XR300HR
248*/254* @ .050 .562/.580 lift with 1.5's 110 LSA 106 ICL |
Awesome now get that thing in god damn it! and random question how do you like wyotech?
|
It'll be in sooner or later, need a new timing chain, and crap.
I love it, the school is awesome IMO |
so much for parting it out over the winte right?
|
that cam is HUGE for what heads you have. just an FYI the cam for my 396 is smaller and my heads are better. just saying. bigger isnt always better. i hope it works out for you good luck.

My old cam was .586/.562 and this one is .562/.580... The only thing bigger is the duration really and I went higher since the car was falling off very early. I NEEDED a cam swap to get away from the 113LSA/113ICL on the old cam which was a nitrous grind. |
I sent you a pm back..like i.said that's.where.i would of put it.but i would of ran lift in the. 630 range to get more dwell time.
|
Well finally home for a week or so from school. Trying to get everything assembled.
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7694219_n.jpg Pretty much done for now. Toss up between putting the old V-belt on or trying my hand at the serpentine setup I have. Only draw back is I didnt get bolts with the serpentine, DOH! Other than that, everything went smooth, lubed the shit out of the cam with the Pro lube as well as the lifter rollers. Had to resort to the dot to dot method, really wish I could have degree it in but no one has a wheel I could borrow. |
dude I have made them out of a frisbee and and two protractors before LOL
|
dot to dot will be fine for now. Hoepfully get some $ and I'll actually degree it. Luckily the cam is built well enough for it to be off a couple degrees anyways.
|
the whole point of degreeing a cam is that you are just asuring that the dot to dot on your timing set is correct. then if you have an Adjustable? timing set you can move the cam from there. i have rarely seen a point in degreeing a cam unless i was putting a motor together with Cheap/Used parts.
|
Everything is used minus the cam. Just wanted to make sure I got it perfect and right on the money.

Well I graduated wyotech top of my class, won some fancy awards as well and earning a few ASE certs. Since I've been home I've been working a shit ton but in my free time I get over to my dads place where the car is and have been wrenching on it.
While porting the heads I managed to go through the pushrod wall due to some really bad core shift in the heads. I ended up drilling out the pushrod tubes to .500 and putting . 014" brass tubes in to seal them. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6479150_n.jpg The port work I've very happy with. I was able to get 280cfm out of them at .600 lift and 200cfm on the exhaust side. Along with new cam and eventually the ported manifold it should deff. make some steam. I only went out to a Fel-pro 1205 gasket too, leaving a lot of room for a 1206 to gain more flow. All this through a set of 2.02/ 1.6 valves on a 4.000" fixture. End product so far.. http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3299035_n.jpg http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5066665_n.jpg |
Also picked up some new headers that I'm gonna adapt the flanges onto my hookers. Theyre a brodix spread port pattern/stahl pattern, then I'm gonna step them from 1 3/4" to 1 7/8"

Looks real good! Congrats on the graduation and when you get done there is a 67 in my garage that needs to be finished!
|
CONGRATS MAN! GOOD NEWS! I bet your stoaked to be home! Were you working? At a garage I hope?
|
congrats on the graduation that's awesome. motor looks great man.
|
congrats man motor looks good
|
Thanks guys!
I'm working for the same motorhome company I was at before but now with a pay raise. I have a few interviews lined up next week for other shops and a few are very promising! Also picked up another project to start working on with my dad. Pics coming soon! |
how about getting the third gen done :P
|
Meh, this one is a classic, and its gonna be a gift to the old guy once its done.

Well she runs, idles, throttle response is AMAZING with the new cam. Lightest pedal movement and she starts to jump up. Got the timing down and a brief tuning to get the idle down. Idles at 1000 in Park and 800 in gear. Timing is at 34* for the time being. Got it up on the converter once and it was smooth as butter. Couldnt be happier!
Aside from one oil leak on the front pan rail, the motor is good to go! And for some reason the trans stopped leaking but its full on fluid lol Guess it didnt like sitting all winter with the Ultrabell |
You got that thing from paul? Goodluck that thing is rough to say the least
|
Yeah It's rough, my dad can do body work and I can do mechanical work so it'll be ok. It's actually pretty solid. Hoping to pick it up from him in the next couple weeks.
|
Sweeeet!! When you gunna drive it?
|
I was gonna take it for a ride today but the weather looks shitty here. Gonna fix the oil leak today and probably recheck lash/
|
Well minor setback, one of the core plugs is old and has decided to start leaking. Gonna see if I can do it in the car :(
|
and it begins....... do an Ls swap man. i honestly cant take it. you have the worst luck. i really and truly feel for yah. and want you to be able to ENJOY your car and not work on it.
|
I dont mind working on it honestly. I replaced them all in car a couple years ago except for that one due to the headers so its my own fault, already got the old one out lastnight so I should be good to go. I hardly work on or even see the car really, I live in fitchburg, cars in worcester at my dads. The shitty part is, the car felt better than it ever has and felt smooth as butter on the t-brake.
It's not so much the worst luck as it is buying peoples beat up shit. I bought my heads a couple years ago from a buddy of mine and threw them on. All they had was like 50 mins of run time and about 6 miles of driving from me. When I took them to school, the springs were junk, tested 260 @ 1.2" when my new cam calls for 343. The springs were floated so many times they were digging and some had gone through the shims and a couple started to dig into heads itself. I had a couple valves that didnt match so I had to buy all new hardware, new valves etc. Lesson learned is to stop buying peoples used shit. Only buying new from here on out. |
Shouldn't the lesson be to use your shit? Lol :p
