What cam do I have?

At Dawg's McDonalds car show, I ran into Mark Decker of Expert Auto in Torrington. He is the one that built the engine I have in the 68 Camaro.

I asked him if he remembered what cam he put in it and he said he remembers everything about the engine.

He said:
solid roller lifter
it is a 636 lift Doug Herbert
good for 3000 to 7000 rpm
205 intake 169 exhaust
ported heads
10.4 to 1 compression

Some of my other specs are:
350 CI small block
TH400 trans

I looked at the Doug Herbert cam selector page here: http://www.dougherbert.com/cam_selector.html

but I am having a hard time with the page and getting anything out of it. Does anyone have any idea what this cam is?

edit: The former owner told me a few years ago that it was a 629 cam.

I got in David but i would call customer service with the info you got.
I do believe you have all the info anyway to get the properly selected torque converter?

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-17-2011 10:45 PM

you really need that duration as well as LSA and ICL other wise you mine as well tell the guy "i got a big donkey dick cam, get me a convert to match that...."

DavidS 07-19-2011 02:44 PM

It would be real nice to have all the cam info.

I got an email back from Herbert Performance: "Those cam specs do not match up with anything that we have. We have a C6F cam that sounds like it may be close but there is no way of knowing with out looking at the number stamped on the front of the camshaft."

It could be this CC6F, but I hate guessing.

Doug herbert changes cams every couple years so you might not even be able to find it online. Happened to me when looking at some cams for sale and I couldnt find them so I called.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-20-2011 12:47 PM

What heads do you have to be able to use a cam that huge? And id say if you can for sure get the number off the front and know what you it would be worth it.

And that sized cam on a 350 have you had it dynoed? I bet the peak will try to spin it wayyyy past 6500 rpm. And it will drastically change what converter they will recomend.

I don't a ton about sbcs but the lift isnt stupid crazy but the durations are, any reason for that? Or is that a ton of lift for sbcs?

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-21-2011 01:11 AM

it has to do wih duration. and LSA/ICL it probably has 50+ degrees of over lap. and wont wake up till almost 3000 rpm or higher? Is that how it drives?

DavidS 07-21-2011 01:32 AM

That is how it drives. I think you are right and it it wakes up around 3000 rpm. It's made me jump running through yellow lights. When I floor it (automatic already in 2nd gear) it spins the tires easily.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 07-21-2011 01:33 AM

yeahy then you need a Big converter. and thats why the cam specs Really make all the difference wen selecting the right one.

84ta406 07-21-2011 01:57 AM

Probably need something like a 4000-4500 converter for that

in the words of boomer, "a donkey dick cam"
