GRRR miss and part throttle ping
ok I had this issue since last year before putting the car away for winter.
I changed coil, installed new distributor (I think i blew the module when i started car with battery buddy hooked up by mistake). but old one was fine. took out and hooked up vacum gauge. needle fluctuates between 17" and 19". normal is a steady 18". I readjusted the idle mixture but still has same fluctuations and part throttle ping. |
sorry us fuel injection guys know nothing about real motors.
bahahaa |
what is your base timing? whats your total advance. how agressive are the advance springs? id tighten them up so it goes full advance at a higher RPM. also is your vaccum module adjustable? if not it can make a BIG difference on driveability!!
|
25 at idle, and 36 total all in @3300 rpm
no vacum advance. mechanical advance springs are the original oem (never needed to change them) |
With age the spring tension will fall and advance will come on a lot sooner. Get a new set or upgrade the distributor is my best guess.
|
brand new distributor right outta the box.
one thing i did notice was the passenger exhaust avg temp was 260ish. the drivers side was avg 370ish. im thinking i might have some crap in the carb causing the drivers side to starve for fuel causing the ping and higher temp. |
so after observing the coolant flow (cap off) until 160 degrees (thermostat opens) im barely getting any flow through the radiator?
I just installed a victor jr waterpump (high flow) and it seems either the thermostat is bad or the radiator is plugged? time to get it backflushed im thinking. |
well I think i found out what is wrong with my car.
Apparently my brother in law figured he would be helping me by tightening down my loose intake manifold bolts. squeezed the gaskets pretty good. so now i know why my plugs were sooty at tidle (suckin in oil) and pinging under load (huge leak from bottom of the intake) I let him change oil in the vehicles which he has done numerous times. (ill pay him for his work of course) he is from the philippines and as a general laborer etc. he is the best but he doesnt know a wrench from a screwdriver. |
that should make a big difference after thats fixed
|
yeah i hope so!
I was about ready to pull the motor! well at least I got a chance to install this now!!!! http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-29254/?rtype=10 |
Fluctuating vacuum is typically a small leak or a valve problem. Do yourself a favor and run a locked out distributor.
|
What was your old intake? For sale?

gunna lose some low end with that intake and bring the power band out a few 100. if thats your goal?
|
Youll gain greatly over the JR. Was yours ported?
The locked out timing will feel so much better. I took. Old HEI and welded it.. 34* feels GREAT |
yeah the JR was ported and the only difference between the jr and the super victor is the jr isnt as high but still had same dimensions.
you can add spacers to a JR for tuning. I had 2" spacer on mine so a super victor will work great! btw my ports are 2.21X1.31 |
well I pulled the intake yesterday to discover that the gasket between the #1 and #3 ports was crushed and torn between the two ports.
also looked like oill was seeping up from bottom of gasket into the ports of the heads. this will explain my miss/ pinging under load and sooty plugs I HOPE!!!! |
ya one oil contamination kills octain two if air was getting in it will run lean and three it can also part foul the plugs and make it run like shit so i would bet that that is your issue. what do you run for fuel on the street and whats the compression, and cam specs.
|
fuel is a mix of 110 octane leaded and 93 octane pump gas.
compression is just shy of 11:1 cam was change 2 years ago ( radical cam was taken out for milder grind) RPM Range: 2200-6000 Advertised Duration: 280/280 Duration @ .050: 225/225 Lift: .525/.525 Lobe Center: 110c |
Wow that cam is pretty tame. I assume 1.6 rockers? You should be able to use just 93 with that combo
|
1:65 rockers to be precise.
cam works great with nitrous. |
Yeah that's a baby cam man!! You big cubes? Over 400? Did the head porter recommend that cam? Aluminum heads? If so use 93 octane. No need for leaded unless you like the stink?
|
had a monster cam and gotten tired of the lopey crap!
I like the smell of leaded gas! Im doin my part to fuck up the enviroment!!!! |
Leaded gas is the way to go his ethanol shit is ruining everything!!!
|
aint nothing like the sweet smell of leaded gas in the morning!!!!
