Best car for around 5k?

Long story short my mom totaled her truck and needs a new vehicle. Shes looking at impalas and other cars based on that platform. She does about 50-75 miles a day so fuel effiency must be decent. Not really sure what to look for but shes open to suggestion. Any help would be great guys

Something smaller than an Impala if you want decent MPGs

Is it going to be just a commuter or is she using for other things. Reason I ask is she had a truck before. My wife has a 00 Bonneville has 3800 in it and runs great gets not bad mileage, gets about 12 or city and hi way gets around 21 or so. The car is the same as an impala.

12 city and 21 highway is horrible for that car. I had a 96 with over 180k and i averaged 23-24mpg. Somethings not right with your wifes car.

I would recommend a Camry if its just basic transportation. my 01 has 225k on it and still averages around 30mpg and the only thing i had to replace was a valve cover gasket 40 bucks and an exhaust leak 80 bucks.

Your right that's not great milage I don't drive the hardly at all I just put gas in it ( of course ) I was figuring on the milage the cars been getting lately and I forgot my wife runs the car when she gos outside for break. The last time we used the for any long distance it did get 24 plus on the highway. I'm sure it still gets that it only has 70 k on it.

Were looking at an impala next saturday. She wants an old lady car and as long as the gas mileage is better than what you her truck was she doesnt mind.

frankzlt1 01-19-2014 12:34 AM

It should be better.

smokinss 01-19-2014 01:15 AM

+1 on Saturn. My 99 sl2 5speed got 31mpg and was great cheep car to fix.

I vote late 90s accord. Decent on gas, comfy, drives like a boat, perfect old lady car

KLAB 01-19-2014 06:00 PM

Accord or Camry is a greaat larger sedan. For smaller efficient car I suggest the Saturn SL1 because they are very reliable and cheap and good gas mileage.

KLAB 01-19-2014 06:01 PM

I was considering a new car this summer but I'm just gonna drive the Saturn till its toast.

Z28 01-19-2014 07:13 PM

I'd say Saturn too but my mom is no small lady by any means haha I want her to be comfy and not feel cramped

Kalstar 01-20-2014 12:33 PM

Domestics like the Dodge Caliper, Chevy Cobalt and PT cruiser do not hold value well and can be bought late model for 5k. Look at Pontiac too, even though parts are still available public perception has pushed the values way down.

ls6monte 01-21-2014 01:38 AM

The dodge caliber is one of the biggest pos's ever made by chrysler. It was voted that! lol

Z28 01-21-2014 04:06 AM

She went and looked at a Buick LeCerne? No clue how to spell it. Listed at a dealer for 6k, has 80k, 2006 model. She says its nice but i know nothing about the newer Buicks so im going to have to do a little homework on it

smokinss 01-21-2014 12:57 PM

Pretty nice car. Not too sure about issues with them though

camarokid91 01-21-2014 03:01 PM

Volvo 850 or S70 are awesome I still miss mine.

28 MPG
leather heated seats
You just need to make sure you keep on regular maintenance and timing belts and they go for over 300k miles.

I honestly might get another one.

CamaroRacing12 01-21-2014 06:13 PM

+1 on the Saturn. My 97 SW2 was great lasted 212,000 miles always got 30mpg no matter how much I beat on it. at 212,000 finally the transmission went so I bought a 2014 Volkswagen Golf TDI.

If bigger is key. go with a late 90's early 2000's Camry or Accord. Cannot lose with one of those.

c4boom 01-22-2014 05:16 AM

my cuz works at a dealer he has every thing from Camry to maxamas go to there auto http://www.autosmithcar.com/

ls6monte 01-22-2014 11:57 PM

The Lucerne's are decent cars. Powered by either the trusty 3.8 v6 or the crappy northstar 4.6 v8. The Lucerne replaced the Park Avenue.

Formula413 01-23-2014 12:51 AM

I wouldn't be afraid of a newer Buick. They look a shit ton better than the older ones, that's for sure. You can even get a Regal (I think it's the Regal) with a turbo.

Z28 01-23-2014 03:15 PM

I guess the budget went up a lot, im going to try and talk her into an accord. My dad wants her in something 4wd so we'll see how that goes
