Dyno operation help needed...

I found a guy here in Bristol that will rent me some dyno time and I have some questions. This guy and his friend have a couple Alcohol 1st gens with blowers running over 900hp and he mentioned that the dyno has to be calibrated. -Prolly just good for tuning. He said he doesn't tune LS vehicles but if I have the software, he can rent me the dyno. I want to pick up EFI Live and some WB02's around spring time... And possibly a FAST intake with new injectors. I would LIKE to try a couple small changes once I get used to the software. I was gonna have Pizza call me and I was gonna ask him some general Dyno questions, but I figured a thread would be just as effective if not more.

-I've been around dyno's a couple times but their operation is somewhat unfamiliar to me. I understand the tie down and I noticed how Pizza would roll the rollers with his feet to make sure the car was settled on there and then check the straps again. -I like that idea.

-Is there just a static/constant load on the dyno?

-The remote that you bring into the car, I take it that's for the computer program to start a read/measurement for the dyno pull, right?

-What things are there to watch out for? Besides a newB trying to tune his own car...... The dyno itself just seems pretty cut and dry. Chock the wheels and strap the car down.

I'll know more come spring time, but if there's anyone who wants to come by and help out, you're more than welcome.. I appreciate any advice given.

I'm pretty sure the people at the dyno know how to strap your car down and run the dyno.

As for tuning- you don't just start changing the tune on the dyno.It should be 80% done on the street,then hit the dyno to check out WOT.

Alot cheaper to have someone like myself just do it. Nevermind will save you about 100hr's of research and questionable changes you will make.

^ I was meaning that they would RENT ME the dyno and let me do my own stuff. I was just trying to avoid a 3 hr ride out there. Not to mention I'll have to drop the car off then come back.

I would just really like to learn how to tune. I'd like to run a data log on it to see where I am and just look through the program.. 100's of hours of research is fine.. It's a hobby and once I get my own data log, I can see what my car is doing and relate to it a bit more.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be NICE to have someone tune it for me, but it'd be like having someone build an engine for me.. Where's the fun and learning in that? Or having someone ace a test for me.. :shrug:

Not trying to sound like an ass, and I don't mean to question you or step on your toes (Or however else this can be misconstrued) but I really want to try this.. It's had my curiosity for a long time.. The last time something caught my interest this much, and for this long, I ended up ripping a weed-wacker apart about 18 years ago. -Which lead me to where I am now.. haha

^ Sometime in the spring. Not sure yet.. I still need to get the EFI Live software/WB02 and poke around with it just on the laptop before I screw my car up for the first time.

I'm just planning in advance for now. -I typically do.

ill be interested in helping out, i never been at a dyno before. i liked to see how it works.

im on board with don on this one. i tried even street tuning my car myself without a wide band($300 for a decent handheld MORE for a guaged in car) and other proper tools and almost destroyed my engine wen it went 21:1 AFR at WOT. my car after don was done made almost 100 more rwhp then my "tune". i read every book researched for WEEKS and still got no were. dyno rental yes you will have use of wideband in house. can you take it with you and make sure your street/driveability is were its at? cuz unless its a Race only car and you will never street drive it a Dyno only WOT tune is useless in my book.

But its your car and after your done waisting tons of money on rentals and tools. call Don and he'll fix your mess. HOPEFULLY

I'll sleep on it for a while. If anything, I SHOULD have a new intake, injectors, rail, FPR lines and POSSIBLY a fuel pump or LT's by spring. Just gotta pay some bills off first.

The smart thing to do is have it tuned,then play with it yourself. That way you can always load in the old table.

Jannety is ussually $600-$800 and might use a SCT handheld programmer.
