Depends on your amp and the sound your looking to get. The W1 is a great entry level low power small enclosure SQ woofer. It will always perform well and can take one hell of a beating.
The W3 is a-whole-nother animal. More midline woofer. Handles bigger power and sounds great. Also its a DVC(dual voice coil) woofer so wiring wise its more versatile than the W1. Its a harder hitting woofer as well so depending on the sound youre looking to get, one W3 might be a better application than one or even two W1s. I install 1 W3D2 12" sub in the well of an 02 NBM WS6 on a 350watt Phoenix Gold and the thing sounded like 2 12s once I tuned it. Downside of the W3 is the price tag. JL knows their equipment is good and charges for it. Also do yourself a favor and only buy JL from local dealers or Crutchfield. JL does not authorize any internet sales and is one of the only companies that does serial number tracking and trust me from experience they WILL NOT honor their warranty if the serial number is listed on their hotlist. Also Kev if youre on a budget, rather than looking at the W1. Checkout the all new W0s. Great woofers, better price. OR do what I did bite the bullet and get the most badass woofer on JL's line. The W6v2s!!!

Reason I ask:
http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/ele/1452582403.html http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/ele/1454405207.html I have this MTX amp I've had for a while and never used it, and its 300 watts bridged I guess? Plenty for me, so I figure basically which ever sub is closer to pick up will do for me since I've never bumped a subwoofer in any of my cars/trucks before lol. I mostly listen to stuff from heavy metal to soft stuff like Jack Johnson so its pretty varied! lol

If your MTX is a 2channel and that W3 is 4ohms(not dual 4ohm coils) then I would absolutely go with the W3.
