I'm rebuilding my shortblock soon. Not gonna pull a cap hell naw. Just going to hone, new rings and rod bolts and a decent top end :3 Good luck with the motor where are you doing to bring the block to have machining done or whatever.

98 hoe 12-05-2011 02:38 AM

Just got the motor back from the machine shop just got to paint it and start putting it back together. The trans is painted and the mounts r all new and painted accesory brackets r painted and the engine bay is degreased and clean. Pics soon.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 12-05-2011 03:08 AM

pics soon is right or im banning you and your goddamn dog!!!

98 hoe 01-18-2012 01:51 AM

what do u guys recommend a pilot bushing or bearing? just finished porting the drivers head, just have to lap the valves and reassemble then do the otherside. i have to bring the crank to the machine shop and get his oppinion on the rean main bearing it has a scratch that can be felt with a finger nail idk if it should be there or not, kinda looks factory but thats where the seal sits so idk.

98 hoe 01-18-2012 01:54 AM

ps. rings r installed and gapped on the pistons and as soon as i hear about the crank bottom ends going together.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 01-18-2012 02:09 AM

DONT JUST BEARING SWAP THE CRANK!!! Get it checked for straightness. depending on how you have had it sitting. either laying down flat on the floor or standing up on the crank hub Which is the way its Supposed to be. But even a week of having it sit flat will ruine a crank. SO with that sed Have It Checked for straight and bearing journals. and i always use a Bushing not a bearing on the LT1's. the longer input shaft tends to wobble Just a bit and wear out/blow out the Bearings.

98 hoe 01-18-2012 03:16 AM

Ok sounds good and the crank was standing up on the flex plate not laying down

SLP IROC-Z 01-18-2012 06:03 AM

yeah definitly worth having the machine shop check the crank out and stuff, no sense in trying to cut corners at this point in the game.

ZFreie 01-18-2012 01:29 PM

For real a crank can come out of round and balance from sitting on its side and not standing up? then hows does shipping work for cranks that are already mechined?

Not trying to instigate, now im courious

nem SS 01-18-2012 06:11 PM

the problem seems to be you have an lt1 sitting under the hood....

frankzlt1 01-18-2012 06:31 PM

im always amazed how much people hate lt1s the only problem that i see with them is the opti, unless im missing something. that generation of small block has been the king of engines sense 1955. i know they changed slightly threw the generations, and i know now that ls style engine is now the new king of engines but for us guys that grew up with the previous generation and made them work very well with parts that you probably wouldnt put them in your lawn mower but its a chevy and there is no better. just rating thats all. lol

SLP IROC-Z 01-18-2012 06:34 PM

i like the LT1s, the opti is an easy fix since the coil on plug 24x conversion is practically a neccessity anyway if your going to mod the car.

frankzlt1 01-18-2012 06:51 PM

ive been thinking of converting the opti over to ls style ignition like what j did. im planning on a rebuild for my car another lt1.

nem SS 01-18-2012 07:37 PM

i don't hate lt1's, just think the ls based engines are far more superior and easier to work on. opti sparks and oil leaks are the major mechanical things i would say. i was tired of replacing them every year and half....plus it seems lt1 parts are really starting to go up since the only made them for 6 years...i just sold my lt1 from my 96 ss, just the long block with no accessories or harness 96k miles for 1000 and it leaked oil everywhere. i thinks kinda crazy but whatever.

Yep, axle shafts, and cams (I think) as well, always store them up-right.

not sure what they do for shipping, I would imagine alot of foam, and possibly some sort of wooden cradle to mimick how it would sit in a block? idk just guessing haha

irockidz28 01-18-2012 11:46 PM

i tried talking him into going ls when he first started to pull the motor out but it didnt work lol

ILuvPizzaTimes10 01-19-2012 01:15 AM

NO LT1 Vs. LS1 or i might explode!!!!!

and they ship with a foam filler that holds the crank at the main bearings.
