I asked this question last year and a ton of people pointed me to the 555s. Huge improvement over the F1s for dry traction. I have only gotten caught in the rain for a few minutes but they were fine.

Yeah, really looking at the 555's, but will need more of an all season type tire with a tread warranty of at least 40k to at least get me past 1 year to be safe. Have also bee looking at the Altimax and Sumitomo's.

Ok for economical reasons, and the fact that it's my dd, I'm going with the general altimax hp's. I have snows for the winter months so thats a nonfactor for winter driving. Will post updates about them as I run them this year if anybody is interested. Should perform better than the Falken Ziex ZE329's I was running last year.

I've heard really good things about these. For a little more money, I'd probably consider these as well.

Let us know how those tires perform. They are reletively cheap. One more thing to concider. Look at sams club online prices. They roll there road hazard into the cost of the tire. Then have sears price match. I can get bfg drags for under 190. Mounted.

Isn't the Altimax a regular passenger car tire?

Not in that profile. More of an aggressive tread design.

Tire Rack lists it as "grand touring all season" and it has 440 tread wear.

Yeah, it's a harder compound, but I'm also trying to go with something that'll run me more than a year on the rims as I do a lot of driving, about maybe 20k or so. Already have about 23k on it from when I bought it last year. So anything with a 30k mile warranty will only get me about a little over a year out of it with rotating every 3-4 months. The tire has a pretty aggresive tread pattern, without the normal pattern of a normal all season like you'd see on the Falken Ziex 512, 912, or 329's. The tread pattern almost mimics the Goodyear F1's with a rain channel in the center and a wear indicator.

It's tough when the car is your daily driver, everything is a trade off. They won't grip like a performance tire but you will definitely get some life out of them. That directional tread pattern works well in the rain, the tires on my DD have a similar pattern. It won't help dry grip at all but then the only thing that would is a more aggressive compound which of course won't last as long.
