I've got a crazy idea someone talk some sense into me
I just saw some pics that got me pretty excited about working on the rx7 again.. especially seeing how its been feeling kinda slow lately.
These pics are giving me some bad ideas. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild049.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild051.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild067.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild056.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild064.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild062.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild072.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...bobuild028.jpg Having this crazy idea that this looks pretty easy and thinking about attempting this myself.. but would like to see if you guys know anyone locally who is talented that I could bounce the idea off as well. Don your usually right but you said if I try to do my own turbo kit I'll prob have an engine fire and burn the car to the ground. This would be one time I would hope your wrong. If I can do this myself with a basic turbo like a MP T70 just to get the most out of the stock shortblock it'll be too fast for me and prob still less than a procharger setup. |
the one thing that you may want to look into is figuring out some way to fit a intercooler

So I would have to mount that turbo a little differently. |
unless your DAMN good with butt welding madrel sections together. and have all the right tools and knowledge. AND you dont cheap out on the equipment. then id say your good BUT if you skip any of those steps OR cheap out i can see bad things happen fast. IE China Turbos. or cheap cheasy cooler piping all can ruin your engine in a matter of a few seconds on start up if not 100% properly setup before hand.

So this is what I'm thinking. Get cheap 110v mig welder (need one anyway) just tack together things and then bring it somewhere to get welded professionally, or have a friend of the family do it. I hear hes a welder but have no idea of his actual area of specialty ect havent talked to him about it yet or seen his work. Thinking something like a Master power T70 (a cheap turbo but not some ebay junk) Something just big enough to max out the stock bottom end. Wastegate (something good) whatever comes up used on supraforums or something. Bov (something decent) same thing 16 ga/ 14 ga mandrel 2.5" bends off ebay my table saw/angle grinder my digital angle finder and my trained eye (lol just kiddin about the last one thats an oxymoron) Ebay intercooler (proven to be just as good as the high dollar units for 1/2 the price) braided stainless oil lines with AN fittings. Oil feed tapped off my oil filter sandwich and return line tapped on the pan. fuel (injectors whatever don suggests, and then add a 2nd walbro 255 and utilize another of the factory hard lines to double capacity of the system. Simple manual boost controller (the evo guys running 20-40lbs of boost swear by these saying they are actually better than most of those fancy digital units and half the price) Gauges.. whatever comes up or autometers that match what I have. If I get it tuned by don I shouldent need a wideband but its never a bad idea. Tuning done by don of course. Adding this stuff up depending on how much material I destroy and how much the welding costs.. I think it would still come in under the cost of a procharger. |
about half of that list is OK first off dont cheap out on the turbo thats your first and biggest mistake. i sed NO china turbos!!!! all you need is to get a bad one out of the box wich has happened it shoots Shards of impeller into your engine and then what? Just saying think long and hard before you just go head first and blow your shit up. get a real turbo thats the only thing i can say about it.

take the time..save the money and do it right it will be worth it in the long run

Very basic turbo. If I find a good deal on a TC76 or TC78 I'de prob go that way instead but for my needs I dont really need that. |
that things gonna be a monster...
|
It can be done but's it's more work than you think.A Procharger setup will be cheaper and take alot less time.

Thats a good bit of work already so we'll see how much time I actually get, just working on it on the weekends. If I do the turbo setup it would be also to gain a new skill. If I did it, I'de buy the manifolds or borrow them from someone, buy the tubing and the welder (because I really need something cheap anyway to tack things together anyway) and see if I can mock up the whole setup before actually buying the turbo and other componets, so if its taking too much time or I get in over my head I can abort and just be out the cost of the tubing/flanges ect. Don the procharger looks like it would be about 3500$ at the bare minimum. The headunit being the biggest expense. At this point I am looking on mustang forums and what not to see if I could even pick up a P1SC cheaper somewhere else and then either finding a corvette mountin bracket (may need to switch to corvette acessories though) or use the swap car mounting bracket that looks the same as the GTO setup. |
Turbo's look/sound cool but the car would be faster at the track with a Procharger. The Procharger works linier compared to a hit with a turbo.
Also with either, that rear has to go for a lower gear. |
Theres going to be a TON of lag with that set up in the pictures! haha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpVTO5a2ItI This guy is walking it off the line, running 9s at 145mph and then driving it home still on the bone stock 5.3 on pump gas no meth Don I'll have to talk to you sometime this winter on what to do with the car.. the car and my goals are at odds with each other now. I've already accomplished the things I want to do with this car and pushing it any more I'll prob exceed its real capabilities so I'm thinking of moving to another rx7 or another chassis in general. I'll have to talk to you more about it. If I did the turbo setup.. the car would no longer really be a drag strip machine because I dont feel like investing in a cage on a rusted chassis. Plus much more power and I'll prob start blowing up rear ends coming off the line at the strip. |
That RX7 at the shootout was on a stock rear end. he was a procharged LS1 running 8.90's just saying. unless your car is That rotted and the rear end is that beat. why not just get a charger and tune it. run 10's all day.

I could prob run 10s cam only. THe only thing is I really liked bracket racing but I have no class my import can race in other than king of the hill |
looks like its time to swap to a cobra rear.

C4s are cheap, I've seen them do really well at autox, even better on a road course, you can fit 315s on them all the way around on certain years, and you can cut 1.3 60s on the stock rear suspension before even having to think about the rear end. So it just seems like a better platform, then I could also run real street or quick street, whatever I want the car to run, and it would prob apprciate in value with the ls1 in it. Plus the ls1 swap should be very easy on that car seeing as all you need to mount an ls1 to old school sbc mounts is adapter plates and a tranny cross mount. Thats where my heads at right now.. wanted to get input from you guys. I could still do the same turbo setup in the c4 or the procharger for that matter. Downsides, the early c4s which are the cheap ones usually have bad wiring issues, they suffer from terrible creaks and rattles have a terribly ugle interior, even though they handle well on a race track doesnt meen the suspension isnt completly upset over even the smallest bumps on real roads. I basically have heard they skip acrss the road on bumps and selection always seems limited in mass. I'll have to drive one to see but from everything I've read a C5 is way better than a c4 in most ways and a c6 is better than a c5 in most ways.. I've driven a stock c6 and although theres nothing wrong with it I thought it felt more like a touring car than a sports car. |
I love how my uncles vet rides in normal mode but he has a zr1 so its a beast of a different breed all together
|
I have a 5.3 in my GXP...ohh the dreaming ;) lol:D
