I hope to be up there a lot this year. Hoping for 11.50's with the cam soon!

DAWG 03-04-2011 05:35 PM

you fail with the burnout lol.

DemonWithin99 03-04-2011 06:25 PM

having LS1 withdraw are we?

Why? You don't rip a crazy burnout on street tires at the track. But you have slicks I'm sure so...

midnight 03-05-2011 05:00 PM

he was talking about me, i had drag radials put on for that run, had never run a burnout with them on and for some reason was having a hard time getting them to spin cuz they were hooking really good..stupid factory stalled automatics lol (shut up thats what im blaming it on)

i actually took the drag radials off and put my street tires back on and pulled out my 12.96. im guessing they were actually doing more damage than good. plus they were Tony's old ones that didnt have much more left in em

c4boom 03-06-2011 04:08 AM

the little spin probably let the motor come up better

midnight 03-06-2011 06:27 AM

I got NO spin with streets. Auto + good track prep

c4boom 03-06-2011 06:42 AM

then it had to be the harder tires = less rolling resistance or some shit

KLAB 03-07-2011 05:45 PM

I knew he meant you but I thought you were on street tires thats why I was like big burnout is ineffective.

You don't need more the a quick second of spinning to clean them off right? And is heating street tires just a waste of rubber? j/w cause I have yet to drag with my car, so good knowledge to have. :newb:

c4boom 03-07-2011 06:04 PM

a tiny little heat is good like a dry hop out of the water box workes well for some unless your like me and have the freak tires that love to get hot. most street tires just get greasy though

My street tires have zlich for traction as is. I need to look into a nice set of summer tires and DRs for the back if I feel like breaking shit. haha

c4boom 03-07-2011 07:17 PM

what you have on it now for tires? nothing has traction below like 50 degrees

*LS1* Queen 03-07-2011 07:31 PM

just get a good set of drag radials...Nitto 555r ftw! street tires suuuck at the track at least the ones ive had and that was running 2.73s lol. IMO its pretty much pointless to do a burnout with them and def stay out of the water box.

Tires that were on it when I got it are bridgestone potenza g009s. They look pretty new but no idea on age. I wanna say a season or two max. No idea if the tires are good bad or ugly.

How do the 555rs do on the street. I know you can't drive in the rain with them, but I don't wanna have to change tires constantly. I also still have 2.73 out back. I wanna go to a better ratio in the back but, I'm not sure if I should bother with the 10 bolt or save for a 12 bolt or 9", or try and be crafty and build my own.

*LS1* Queen 03-07-2011 08:10 PM

the 555Rs are great on the street and they are absolutely fine in the rain and colder weather as long as u dont drive like a nut. If u dont go nuts with burnouts they will last u a good amount of time. I had mine on for 2 years and that was with many burnouts lol granted they were bald for awhile before i replaced them haha. Dont worry about the 10 bolt right now it will hold with gears in an auto. I put 3.73s in mine last summer and its great. Huge difference from the 2.73s! It will feel like a whole new car once u get rid of em. The gear ratio all depends what u want to do with the car in the long run. Id say do 3.42s but after driving around on the 3.73s my vote will always go for them from now on lol but like i said depends on ur plans.

Good to know, and I hardly ever do burn outs. I might fan the tail out a bit leaving stop signs from time to time but only done a smoke show once. Only reason I don't wanna go with 3.73 is cause I want to drive it this summer farther then the local area haha. 3.42s seem to be what I'm leaning towards. And if my 10 bolt comes apart at the track you get to help me put a new rear end in lol So it looks like this year Ill be shooting for 3.42, yank 3600ss and nittos. Unless convinced otherwise. Do I need a 15 inch rim to mount the nittos or can I go with a bigger rim? Or would that be pointless? I havn't found anything I like for rims really.(other then c5 rims) Alot of people run prostars and draglites but personally don't like the look.

Formula413 03-07-2011 09:57 PM

You can get Nitto 555R tires for pretty much any size F Body wheel, and they work great, awesome dry traction and no noticeable difference from regular street tires in the rain. I've been running them on the rear for 2 seasons and can't imagine using regular street tires again. They will also last longer than any other drag radial.

Awesome, my other question was would having a 17" rim DR vs a 15" rim DR make a difference? I know the 15" will have more side wall, will that allow for it to run less psi and make the sidewall softer making it hook better? I'm talking only track with good prep, I know on the street it wont matter so long as I'm running a DR lol, Hope i asked that clearly enough.

Formula413 03-07-2011 10:49 PM

No the wheel size will not make a difference. A radial tire isn't going to wrinkle up the sidewall like a bias ply slick will no matter how hard you launch it. NT555Rs do have a little softer sidewall than a normal radial tire, but used on a 17" wheel the sidewall flex is not too bad. Also NT555Rs are not designed to need very low pressure to get the best traction.

Alright, awesome, thanks for the info. Ive found "ask once, do once" works better the fail once, ask once, then do it again and get it right. haha, So would it still be wise to have a full set of summer tires (for long long drives) and then just a set of DRs for the back or just run the DRs 24/7 in the back. I ask cause for instance my brother lives 4 1/2 hours north in Maine and don't know if the DRs would be wise to travel that far on or if I wouldn't notice a difference either way. And again thanks for helping a newbie.

looked at Nittos site, should I go with 555r or 555rII?

Formula413 03-07-2011 11:43 PM

I run mine all the time, no point in only having traction sometimes. Only way ti would make sense to switch is if you run a more aggressive tire at the track.

The NT555RII is basically the same tire but with a stiffer sidewall, it is aimed more at the autocross crowd. The idea is that it will handle better but ride a little firmer. Never driven on one so I don't know how they are.

I do want a car that can run a good 1/4 but I don't want to lose the joy of some squiggly roads, thats my fear with building this. I wanna try stay in the middle of a drag car and a auto cross car. Part of why no slicks and skinnies for me. Same reason my cam and head choice down the line will be in the middle. At the end of the day I don't care about 1/4 times and dyno #s, I want a car thats solid everywhere and not lacking and fun to drive any time. So no .600+ lift cams, 200cc heads here, or 5000stalls, not this build atleast.

I also looked into this but couldn't find a solid answer. Would running say the 555rII up front be worth it, turning performance over a nice summer tire?

midnight 03-08-2011 02:09 AM

Honestly. My ls1 was very lightly modded (see sig) and through an auto at the track in regular 555s not the drag radials I could plant the gas and get no wheel spin. The 555s are under estimated they have excellent wet and dry traction on the street and one he'll of a tread life. Drag radials I wouldn't even bother with unless your stalled or have 3.73s. As far as my streets at the track, I'd get into the box and mat it, and just ride it out til I caught traction. Usually was good enough to clean them. I hear people behind you get pissed tho lol

Thats on dry hard pavement tho its rubber on rubber at the track with the track prep vs rubber on hard pavement greater coefficient of friction so you'll feel your tires grip much better than on the street. Street tire rubber is soft also so a quick lil spin to clear off dirt is fine and just doing that will warm them pretty well. Ripping big burnouts is just a waste of tires. But thats just me I've raced like 10 times in total my whole life lol.

Yes, that was an engineering statics based post ahahaa

too much school :c

c4boom 03-10-2011 01:05 AM

I like my g force sports and I hook harder than 1/2 the guys running drag radials

midnight 03-10-2011 08:46 PM

ill tell ya right now, if i get my TA, im running 555s all year round again. lol done
