Rear Main Seal bolt snapped inside of block
 

so I was putting the rear main seal housing on today and long story short the bolt snapped under 15 ft lbs of torque...an inch into the block i can't seem to drill it out without it walking off the center if the bolt to even get an extractor in, its a 1/4 inch bolt and I need this thing out now any ideas?

just in I just drilled through the center of the bolt

That sucks I feel your pain. Were u able to get it out.

Just make sure you dont snap a screw extractor in the hole you drilled, then your really screwed.......theres no drilling those things lol

Uh-oh, thats no good lol....not sure what to do now....is it sticking out of the block a little? If you have a dremel, or anything like that, maybe try to cut a slot in the extractor so you can get a flat head screw driver on it, not sure how well that would work but....thats all I got

there about an inch before you get to the threading for the bolt so I'm thinking tap the the shouldered section with a fine thread I should be able to get away with this

just got the new bolt that is going to replace the old one and amm about to tap the shouldered section wish me luck! lol

I got made a successful tap to a 5/16-24 bolt and get about 3/4' of the thread to tap in on top of the bolt that snapped off inside. While I was at it I switched the other bolts to grade 5 and 8 replacements, drilled out the rear main seal housing to fit the new 5/16 bolt and torqued them all down, and I'm good to go! Crisis averted!!!!! here's a pic of it "finished"! just need to drive the seal in and drop the pan enough to replace the rear section of the oil pan gasket adn go at it like a raped ape with "The Right Stuff"http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...0/100_0362.jpg

cae it looked like oodles of fun! no cause it was leaking and the oil pan gasket just below it was torn so I nkew I might as well pull it out anyways and replace both the seal and the gasket
