Finally resurrecting the turd gen!

So, after parting out the camaro and opening up my own shop again I've been toyless all season. Well, sold a car I took in trade for some labor and been getting caught up at the shop so time to get something together for myself again!
Now, on to the good stuff. The car started life as an 87 formula with a carbed 305 and an automatic. I cloned it into a 91/92 gta, and we swapped in a black interior with fourth gen console. Only other thing I did was add c5 front brakes, fourth gen 3.42 posi rear, subframe connectors, zo6 wheels, and exhaust.
Ran it like that for a few years until the motor started making noise and I parked it. Well, while it was stored at my friends place someone stole the wheels and front calipers :/. Now it's at my new shop where it's been patiently waiting.

So, here's the plan, been back and forth over a lot of ideas but this is the final one and 97% of the parts are here in my possession or in the mail already.
Doing a 5.3 with a gt45 turbo, flipped truck manifolds, front mount intercooler, 60lb injectors, ls1 intake and accessories, and most likely an ls9 cam and springs.
Backing it up with a t56, monster clutch, spohn crossmember and crossmember mounted torque arm. Got another set of c5 front calipers so keeps the vette brakes. Walboro 450 fuel pump, lt1 fourth gen gas tank, and radiator with dual fans out of the 95 camaro. And that's about it. Super budget build with all cheap parts so I can have a toy to play with until I get the 68 done. Gonna run 12-14 psi on pump gas and see what it does. Should be a fun toy. Hopefully getting started on it in the next week or two. More pics to follow as I get into it but here's how everything sits now.

That should be a pretty sweet build Matt! I dont think ive ever got a good look at this car in person either, Id say its time to get it back together lol. If you want to sell either of those shifters let me know.

Can't wait to see that pile of parts turn into a beastly drivetrain!

In for turbo lsx

bottledbird68 09-10-2013 11:31 PM

Thanks guys. It's been parked for probably 5-6 years while I've been busy with other stuff. It's time. It's one of my forever fleet. Brought my daughter home from the hospital in it. I'm thinking it'll be a fun bang around toy. Most likely repaint it over the winter. It's got some dings all over from the ice storm a few years ago. So body won't be perfect for now but screw it. My ultimate latest goal is turkey burn but hopin for way before that lol.

Joe, the loose shifter is the pro 5.0 off the camaro. I'm most likely gonna use that one. One on the tranny is a factory hurst with a short stick. I'd probably part with that one if you're interested. Need to see you soon for that power steering pump lol

More car porn to add to the thread.
Everyone puts a soda can next to their turbo for size reference. Well, I used a hug cause that's how we roll around my house lol

Guess it's truly on now!!!

That sounds like a fun toy!

Except that's just a little hug so that Turbo must be smalllll..... LOL

bottledbird68 09-11-2013 01:21 AM

Yeah it's nothing huge. Not looking to break any records with it but lots of guys on the turbo forums with them on 5.3 running low 11's to mid 10's with basically same set up. Plenty for this project.

KLAB 09-11-2013 02:08 AM

Nice you will have plenty of room in that engine bay to do a turbo setup as opposed to the 4th gen. I like that car, cant wait to see it come together! Are you fabricating your own y pipe flange and cold side?

bottledbird68 09-11-2013 03:20 AM

Yeah I'll be fabricating all my own piping. Not the first third gen I've turbo'd. It will be the first one I've done for myself though ;)

bottledbird68 09-11-2013 03:23 AM

It will be the first ls third gen I've done though. I'm looking forward to having a cheap beater. Most expensive part of the whole car is the tranny. Everything else is cheap. I could grenade the motor and turbo in one shot and be out like $600 lol. Poor car will probably get beat like a red headed step child cause I don't care if it blows up. I have next to no money into it and its all cheap to replace.

KLAB 09-11-2013 05:15 AM

Sweet man thats badass! I really want to do that myself fabricate a turbo system on a budget. Everyone of my friends with turbo cars say they are a nightmare though. I might go with Procharger for boost to learn, then maybe down the road do a turbo 5.3 or something.

bottledbird68 09-11-2013 11:59 AM

Eh, they aren't that bad. Hardest part is packaging everything and building headers. I'm cutting out the header part this time by running flipped manifolds. I suppose just bolting on a supercharger kit would be way easier but after driving all the different forms of boost I prefer a well set up turbo car. My preference

KLAB 09-12-2013 03:02 PM

Yeah that's the killer is the headers. For an LT1 you really have to buy aftermarket things and you know a 4th gen LT1 engine bay is way too cramped. If I had an LS I would probably to turbo before before s/c because I could flip manifolds and fab a y pipe to a whatever flange, smash one 3" pipe out the passenger side under the manifold. I have my 78 Z I should probably turbo, there's a lot of room.

bottledbird68 09-12-2013 03:24 PM

Yeah, way more room in a second gen. Don't necessarily need to buy turbo manifolds either but it would make it easier. Could also do a log set up or custom headers. The other one I did we ordered a weld up header set for a drag car that came with flanges and a bunch of bends and I made my own.

On another note, skipping the ls9 cam set up. Scored an ls6 cam/springs for cheap so going with that. :)

Don't you need to modify the 5.3 a little to fit the LS9 cam in there?

bottledbird68 09-12-2013 04:41 PM

Ish, you need to change the cam gear and timing cover for it.
I was gonna go that route cause I couldn't find a used ls6 cam. They seem to sell instantly on ls1tech. The whole ls9 setup is still like half the cost of an aftermarket cam/springs if you get it all new from gmpartsdirect. But, got lucky and got a response from a wtb on corvette forum. :)

Z28 09-12-2013 04:44 PM

In either sense like you say it's a good budget boost cam

bottledbird68 09-12-2013 08:07 PM

Yup. Scrounging every last bit for the best deals I can find. All said and done I'll have about 4 grand into the whole build. My goal is a nice fun driver that burns out at will and hopefully runs mid 11's. I don't really want it to go any faster cause I have no plans to cage it. This will be my cruiser. Debating even keeping ac. Leaning against right now though due to budget and packaging issues.

No auto here. This is a fuck around toy, and a fuck around toy needs a man pedal ;)

Started picking away at things today. Got all the truck stuff off the motor

Pile of stuff
http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc28a9891.jpg
And I just had to plop the ls1 intake on it :)

And an inspiration pic. This is basically what I'm copying. May or may not move the battery to the back. I know either way it won't live next to the turbo.
