By "crash bars", you're referring to "crumple zones"?

You're absolutely right that cars are much safer. I always thought cars in the 30's were heavy, slow and fairly safe due to the low speed. But when I checked, it looks like fatalities peaked in the 30's. The mid to late 60's were a close second.

Actually I was thinking of the bars in the doors that protect you in a side impact, maybe that's not the correct term?
