My bro just told me the shop says they believe his timing chain broke, and maybe some bent valves. (not sure if they would seeing as this happened during startup) any help in this dept. would be great. this poor kid has had a rough year with this thing already and still owes $ for the clutch job.

I'm looking for the lowest cost and most beneficial options for him. the car is staying stock only mod is lid and c/b. $$ is super tight. and he's driving around my DD. while I drive my t/a in this crap.

help....

I daubt a valve kissed it if it was on start up however i guess you never know if money is tight then it is time to learn to do it yourself and start pulling it apart do the chain and see if it is ok after that if not then pull the heads. ls1howto.com is your friend. I also heard pizza works for cheap but I dunno if he will travel lol

IF the timing chain broke more than likely valves are bent.

I have a bunch of complete stock heads here.

I'll call you when I hear back from this mech. I guess he's going to pull it apart and find out for sure? if not I'll talk my bro into us doing it. my only issue is a place to do it. my garage is being used by the preggo wife...

I bet AAA would tow it up to you!!! lol if not I'll ask you via phone about what you can do for him.

Its not that bad of a job to do. I had both my heads off last year and did the whole job with just hand tools. And then just did the cam swap, again not bad at all.

Yeah I was gonna say if the chain actually broke you can bet on there being valve and possibly piston damage. If the chain is broken you really need to pull the heads and see what is going on before you do more damage trying to just replace the chain. Hopefully there is no piston/block damage. But def don't mess around, get the timing cover off and see how the chain looks

kinda hoping it's just the plastic tensioner, but it's out of my hands my bro lets this guy just do shit then charge him later usually not too bad, but still more than he can afford right now.

There is no plastic tensioner. Just gears and a chain. I've only seen 1 chain break and that was on a Cammed car. Something else could of caused the problem.

too bad you weren't closer. I bet I would of been cheaper for the clutch and this stuff your doing.

thought there was a plastic guide in the 98's? but yeah I've never heard of stock motors breaking chains. the problem is probably something small and stupid. and this guy will walk all over my bro and do all this work for nothing (by pulling the front end apart) then rape him with service fees.
