Progressive Insurance - WTF

A year ago I switched to Progressive insurance for both my cars. Rate was pretty good and I heard good things about their customer service. I got my renewal notice today (due next month) and the new premium is 23% higher. No changes to coverage, no tickets/citations/points, nothing. WTF?!?!? Someone told me they had heard Progressive pulls stuff like this. But I have my motorcycle insured with them too, and it was due last month and only went up about 6%. Not too impressed at the moment.

Just shop it all around....

We do that every year and it's always at least the ~the same as current cost.

Got lucky this year and actually saved with switching companies!!

check Geico...thats my current one..they were the only company when i was trying to fully insure the camaro at like 19-20 for sub $300 a month and no one has been able to beat their rates for me since..granted i dont have the BEST record but thats point in case.

I've heard a LOT of complaints about Commerce, there is even a body shop near me that has a sign saying they won't perform work for anyone insured by Commerce.

bottledbird68 04-21-2011 04:20 AM

Commerce sucks ball bag if something ever happens and you NEED them.

Speaking from the side of the buisness that deals with them when they are needed (bodyshop industry) the three I used to be thrilled to deal with were Hanover, arbella, and Plymouth rock. They are the ones that won't screw you over and are actually almost pleasant for a shop to deal with.
My favorite was Plymouth rock and it's who we currently have now. Had Hanover for years before them but my agent dropped them for some reason and switched to them. I was cool either way.

Neither one was bad price wise (we're around 2g's a year with four cars, full coverage on two and comp on the other two). Bargain shopping isn't always the best idea. Like mayhem says "your cut rate insurance might not cover this."
Think about that one. It's really one advertising slogan that holds true ;)

To be honest I take a pretty dim view of insurance companies, in my experience they are all out to screw you over, that's how they make their money.

This is true. But some a lot more so than others. ;)

There's a reason all those less expensive companies weren't in mass a few years ago. They didn't want to follow certain rules mass had. As soon as mass deregulated and allowed the companies to do whatever it opened the flood gates.
I've read a lot of horror stories about most of them and how they treat their customers in the industry trade magazines.

irockidz28 04-22-2011 01:58 AM

idk..i have had good luck with them so far..i did file a claim i couple months ago and they came looked at it and i had a check with in a few days

DemonWithin99 04-22-2011 06:06 AM

Oh sure, you'll get a check from them just as quick as the rest of them.
But, they will pay on a lot less. Most often leaving out a LOT of things you should be entitled to. And then they like to bust your balls when you go for supplements over things that should be covered and most other companies won't complain about.

Most commerce estimates I see I could normally find an additional 50-75% in damages that weren't written on the initial estimate.
They all will usually short you on the initial estimate but commerce is the worst by far. And they tend to make it the hardest to get paid your due.

Food for thought, a lot of people that work for commerce won't use them cause they know how their company treats their customers lol.
I know a few and trust me, this is fact ;)

MTBSully 04-22-2011 11:47 AM

i love amica and they have never given me a problem. All my friends with progressive think i am kidding when i tell them my rates cuz their rates are so high

CJaguar265 04-25-2011 11:29 AM

i have commerce $957 for full coverage

yeah they do undervalue the damage estimates

smokinss 04-25-2011 03:15 PM

Yeah I've had all state since I moved to florida but just like you they kept on raising rates for no reasone. So we just switched to state farm.

ILuvPizzaTimes10 04-25-2011 10:14 PM

so gas prices go up. comcast goes up. cell phones go up. no one bitches. CAR INSURANCE WTF!!!!!!! dude its life shit goes up. its what is going to happen in this economy. call around and im willing to bet you MIGHT find a cheaper rate else were But customer service and repaires will suck to deal with.

Formula413 04-25-2011 10:20 PM

23%? With no changes?

ILuvPizzaTimes10 04-26-2011 02:36 AM

inflation has hit every industry. wen more people have there car repo-ed or crash or whatever less are insured or have taken a hit off the insurance company. how do they recoup the pay out or loss of income. YOU!

Formula413 04-26-2011 02:42 AM

All that stuff happens day in and day out every year. It's pretty obvioius that their original quote was a teaser rate that was not advertised as such. Oh well, that's why competition is a good thing.

StuntmanMike 05-06-2011 02:47 AM

I've had bth my car insured with Progressive the past 5 years, and that's never happened to me. In fact my rate when DOWN few bucks this past renewal.

Plus I had to make two claims in a month, one for my Jeep and one for the Bird, and both times they cut me a check right on the spot. In fact I kinda made out on my Jeep...my rusty steel wheels with half worn mud tires were stolen, and after the check, a new set of 31" Goodyears on alloys only cost me 250 out of pocket.

And no complaints with customer service....in fact everyone I dealt with was quite good.

Formula413 05-06-2011 04:43 AM

I got some other quotes that were in the same range. Next thing I'll do is call Progressive and see what their explanation is.
