A year ago I switched to Progressive insurance for both my cars. Rate was pretty good and I heard good things about their customer service. I got my renewal notice today (due next month) and the new premium is 23% higher. No changes to coverage, no tickets/citations/points, nothing. WTF?!?!? Someone told me they had heard Progressive pulls stuff like this. But I have my motorcycle insured with them too, and it was due last month and only went up about 6%. Not too impressed at the moment.

Just shop it all around....
We do that every year and it's always at least the ~the same as current cost. Got lucky this year and actually saved with switching companies!!

I've heard a LOT of complaints about Commerce, there is even a body shop near me that has a sign saying they won't perform work for anyone insured by Commerce.

Commerce sucks ball bag if something ever happens and you NEED them.
Speaking from the side of the buisness that deals with them when they are needed (bodyshop industry) the three I used to be thrilled to deal with were Hanover, arbella, and Plymouth rock. They are the ones that won't screw you over and are actually almost pleasant for a shop to deal with. My favorite was Plymouth rock and it's who we currently have now. Had Hanover for years before them but my agent dropped them for some reason and switched to them. I was cool either way. Neither one was bad price wise (we're around 2g's a year with four cars, full coverage on two and comp on the other two). Bargain shopping isn't always the best idea. Like mayhem says "your cut rate insurance might not cover this." Think about that one. It's really one advertising slogan that holds true

To be honest I take a pretty dim view of insurance companies, in my experience they are all out to screw you over, that's how they make their money.
