I'm an old-timer who's been around the Drag scene since the days of flagmen and flashlights (Remember the race scene from the movie "American Graffiti"..?) The only strip around back then was at the Sanford Airport in Maine.

Over the years, there have been several attempts at strips in Mass. Some even got built such as 'New England Dragway South' in Norwood, MA back in the late 60's. They spent a bundle building it only to have to shut it down after a few seasons because the noise was bothering the Yuppies who built houses next to it...!! A-Holes...!!!

Then, there was talk about building one in Palmer, MA but they ran into the same problems with the Town Fathers.

The Mohegans (the folks who take your money at the Casino) talked about bringing back the strip at the old Connecticut International Raceway in Colchester, CT. For awhile, the Casino sponsored a Funny Car so why not build their own strip with a buffet restaurant and a few slot machines...!!

And then there was talk a few years back about someone putting in a track at the East Hartford Pratt & Whitney plant. I guess that idea was put to rest, too.

What it all boils down to isn't just money. It has to be built where no one else can come in and build houses next to it and then complain about the noise....DUH..!! For the time being, NED has been the only place nearby that's been able to keep going without any hassles from the locals.

"Back in the day..", we had no fancy strips. But we sure had a helluva lot of fun on the streets...!! Ahhhhhhh......Route 1 at the lights in Norwood where Art Johnson's burger joint used to be is hallowed ground. I think part of my transmission is still in the woods along the side of the road....!!!

;-)
