I'm looking for a new apartment, and I have no concept of how much utilities are. All my other apartments have had everything inlcuded, so I never saw the bills.
What would I be looking at ballpark in a 1 bedroom apt with gas heat? How about electric and water? I'm actually going to look at places tomorrow, one includes utils, the other doesn't. I'm wondering what the real price diff is between the both of them when the utilities are factored in. Thanks. |

depends on what your renting, how old the systems are ie. boiler, outlets. and how much you use.

my electric hovers around 100-120 in the winter and kicks upwards of 180 in the summer. Im on oil hest which averages to about 200 a month during the winter months. My hot water is off the oil too. But this was probably useless to you considering I own a 2 bedroom house and have a 1bedroom apt above me I rent out.

I've heard electric heat gets really expensive, same with oil (which I hate anyway), so I'm going to make it a requirement that it has gas heat if I have to pay for it. |

In my experience the secret key to lowering your heating bill is DONT touch the thermostat. Alot of people seem to think that cranking the heat down while they are out and running it when they get home saves money. It doesnt. All your doing is using more energy reheating the house than if you just leave it alone. Now my brither and I take it to the extreme alittle and we dont set the thermostat above 58 all winter. I would say 63-65 is fine. Remember a blanket and a sweatshirt are free.

I lived in a two bedroom two floor townhouse for a few years that had electric heat and the electric bill was as high as $240 in the winter, around $60 in the summer. That apartment was on the end of the building so three of the four walls were exposed to the outside, which increases the need for heat.

i live in a 3 bedroom on the 3rd floor with my fiance, my brother and my nephew, our apartment is beautiful, however were the last apartment on the building and were so far away from the boilers, its always freezing in here in the winter, cuz by the time the hotwater gets up here for the forced hot water heating its not that hot, showers and baths are perfect tho, i dont know why, and i run my super computer 20 hours a day and so does my brother and my nephew so our bills are outrageos, we pay like $250 for heat in the winter and about 120 in the summer, and the electricity is also like $200 all the time, when i had my 1 bedroom with my fiance it wasnt bad at all, our electric was $65 and the heat was also about the same, we werent home from 8AM-4PM so we saved that way cuz we didnt leave computers or anything running, hope that gives ya an idea, also my brother might be moving out so ill be looking for a roomate, if u were to move in ud get a gigantic bedroom and well probably make my nephews room into a game room or office or something, the rent here is $900/m and we split it, so it'd be $450 + utilities
