HA!
Yep. It should be getting primer and paint soon. Mike painted a sample ralley green but original areas like under the trunk lid looked slightly darker than the paint code. He is going to match it and make it slightly darker.
Ralley green is not the most attractive color in the world, but that's how it was so that's what it's going back to.

Thanks Matt!!!
Green is definitely a tough color to love. I saw one post where I think that Slowhawk also might not have been too in love with his "green Bugga".
The 1969 owner (Alfred) also wasn't 100% in love with the rallye green and almost bought a burnished brown plain jane Camaro over the Z/28.
Regardless....it's a historical thing. If the drivetrain wasn't numbers matching I wouldn't be so sure, but since it is and I tracked down and talked to the former 8 owners who kept it rallye green, it should go back to the way it was.

Green is definetly a color for personal taste but you have to admit the early 90's Polo green on the Vette's and the "cough cough" Forest green on the mustangs were pretty nice colors.

Mike showed me a sample today that is real close to the underside of the trunk color. I think it will look great since it's darker than the first sample he showed me.
He took the hood apart to totally get rid of all the trapped rust.

Mike is a perfectionist. The 68 is my fun car. If he ever started working on it, he would start to find hundreds of problems. Also cowl induction hoods didn't come out until 1/2 way through 1969. No 68 had them and the hood on there now is a crappy reproduction.
I'm just going to leave it for now.

Correct. It's supposed to be natural with overspray. From a Camaro Research Group post "The bellhousing was on the engine when it was painted, and normally shows at least overspray on the forward 3"-4", although coverage varied greatly."

Crud. Mike might have used a set that came with the tires. I have a correct repop set there that I picked up from PaceCarJeff.
they are ment to be longer.
remember it gets a wheel trim ring.
My 69 corvette has extra long stems and they are just right with the trim rings on.
Double check before getting the short stems David.
jeff68
03-22-2013, 12:16 PM
Typically the longer stems are used with full wheel covers, and the shorter ones with trim rings. I have original wheels w/ NOS wheel covers and a set of GM rally wheels, so I had to get 2 different stem lengths.
Here is a CRG thread showing the shorter length valve stems on unmolested rally wheels:
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9824.0
Now, do you have the correct old style 'winged' wheel weights? These cal also be seen the the photos on CRG. Then you have to figure out where to get air from 1969. It just keeps on going...

I'm surprised you've stuck with it this long!
I like things to be nice and original, but I gave up on the whole "100% technically correct" thing a long time ago. F 'em. It's my car. Some things I want done my way. Why? Because that's the way I want it (or, in the case of my car, Dad's way trumps my way). If you don't like the finish on my pinion yoke, go talk to someone who cares.
I applaud you for doing what you are doing. It takes a special kind of person to do it. Special = a little crazy. That's meant in a good way. Hopefully, you'll do the show car thing for a while, then let the world enjoy seeing a flat-hood 69 Z/28 cruising the streets.

We all get a certain amount of satisfaction from people telling us we have a nice car. I just makes you feel good. Nothing wrong with feeling good.
I wonder about the Camaro National as well. It almost seems like it's all about finding fault. Instead of "wow, this is a really nice car, you just need a few details to make it better", it may be "this is wrong, that is wrong, fix it and better luck next year". I hope it's the former and not the later.
Either way, try to have fun with it. Sometimes I loose track of that, and my dad / family / friends need to remind me that I do this for fun. F u n .......... F u n .......... F u n .......... I need to repeat it slowly & take deep breaths sometimes.

The Maratta Show had a Las Vegas type vibe to it. It's not the SEMA show or anything but it was cool to see big crowds walking around the car taking loads and loads of pictures. It was like the car was a Hollywood star on the red carpet. LOL.
Most people there didn't know or didn't care about numbers stuff. They just liked seeing the car and it was nice over hearing a lot of dad's explaining to their kids how cars used to be when they were growing up. I thought that was great.
Next year, I'd like to bring the Z to the Maratta Show and maybe the Boston World of Wheels show.
The most fun part of all though is cruising around the streets of Granby CT and Southwick Mass.

This was a real tough decision. I believe most cars had a lot more black but I have seen pics where some were primer. For modern judging, they want a uniform 30% gloss black with some overspray. In judging in the 80's, they allowed either primer gray or black. In the end, I took Mike's advice and just went with how this car looked and put it back to how we think it looked originally.
looks awesome!!!!!!!!
Thanks Frank!!!

After a year or two of being a trailer queen it'll be time for a day 2 makeover ....better tires, better shocks, and headers!
On Monday, it'll be 37 days but that includes weekends. I might be screwed but Mike says it'll be done.

HA. I hear ya Dawg....a lot of time and money but for me it's a "once in a life time" car and I don't think I'd let anyone else touch this car. I've been emailing the former owners who were Vietnam vets on the status of the car and some are going next year and maybe some this year to the Camaro Nationals.
It's going to be a "points chasing trailer queen" for two years max. Then, day 2 mods and I'll be driving it. During the first two years, I'd have to trailer it to the torrington show. If you help me do that....even a small amount of help.....I'll bring it.

Looking good. Man, those tires look skinny, especially on 7" wide wheels.
The rear end was painted black as an assembly, which means that the rear brake drums would be black and the parking brake cables would have black overspray on them where they enter the backing plates.
Also check the AIM for proper orientation of the tie rod end sleeve clamps. IIRC, there is an unusual orientation.
Not trying to pick the car apart, but the judges will!

Yep. All 69 Z/28's were equipped with 15x7-inch rally wheels. The early ones (Sept-Dec 68) were stamped "AD" and after that they were stamped "YH". Original, stamped and date correct YH wheels are on it now.

^^ Nice plate. I assume it is a repro(?) I have the original plate off of my car, and I had a repro made by licenseplates.tv. It came out nice (the 2nd time around!). If you get creative with a color printer, you can make a pretty decent registration sticker. I made a July 68 sticker since that's when my car was delivered. Technically, the registration would have been renewed in June 68 so the sticker would have the expiration date of June 69. But I wanted the sticker to have the year of the car on it. Anyhow, I have the file somewhere. If you want it I'll e-mail it to you.

The hood is going to be lined up before the stripes go on. Also, the blackout paint on the bottom of the front fenders has to go on (also done after alignment).
Front stripes definitely have to go on:

J52 brakes (front disc brakes)

Yep. It's supposed to be on there, but sometime between Jan 1969 and Dec 1969 someone took it off.
I'm still buying small last minute items. Today, I was scrambling trying to find an original console gauge cluster cover. Mine is cracked in two spots. http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l604/1969Z/GaugeCover.jpg

The Z has to be in the trailer tomorrow. Mike and his crew were having loads of problems with the heater core today. The repop one had a lot of cracks in it and was leaking everywhere. The NOS one would not hold pressure and was leaking internally. Even though the old one was a little rusty, it held pressure and they ended up putting it back in. The 44 year old one was the only one that would work and there wasn't enough time to screw with the new ones.
Also there were a loads of electrical gremlins to get worked out. The car is looking nice though.

Good Luck - Can't wait to hear the stories on the previous owners now seeing the car again in all it's glory!!!
Thanks Eric! Only one of the former owners is going. The main reason is that I was not sure if the car would be done in time.
The car is ready to go now though, with the one exception being the ammeter that is not working.

A little late, but the exhaust manifold heat riser should be installed so that the weight is on the outboard side.
Are you sure Jeff? I asked Mike and Andrew to install it just like JohnZ said and to make it look like his Z/28 engine pictured below. They did exactly what I asked.
http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l604/1969Z/DZ302-JohnZ-heatriser.jpg
JohnZ wrote: “The “extension” was used on all cars at the RH exhaust pipe-to-manifold attachment, in addition to the heat riser valve; it supports the inside diameter of the packing, keeping it from disintegrating (it was also used on the other side). The illustration in the A.I.M. is incorrect – it should show the heat riser valve too. If you look in the “non-illustrated parts” sheet at the beginning of the L34/L35/L78 sections, under UPC 6, where it has the line item for “intake & exhaust manifolds & heat control”, it shows the “assembles same as production” symbol (the “heat control” is the heat riser valve). ”

Looks awesome. The under body was never factory painted? Is the oil filter OEM white or are they ac delco blue?
Thanks Frank!!!
There is a lot of debate on the underbody color. The problem is there was gray primer applied by hand some cars got a lot of gray primer and some got none. The judges expect 30% gloss black (I think it's 30%, but definitely black). I decided to have it painted to what I believe was there originally. Lots of gray primer.
Originally the filters were a white PF25. I think at some point in 1969 they changed to or from a white PF29. I have a reproduction PF25 on there right now. An original 44 year old one would deteriorate rapidly and would probably not be very good for the engine.
Is the hood a functional air induction hood? Too bad you didn't have the era battery for it.
No, it originally had a flat hood. Cowl induction came out half way through 1969 and this car was made too early to have a cowl hood. The original flat hood is on it right now.
The battery on the car right now is a Y55. It is an original battery and it took me about a year to find one. I have a post on 69 Z/28 batteries here: http://www.z28.net/2012/07/12/y-55-delco-battery/
Also, the DZ302 shown in post #309 is not my engine. It's from one of the main guys in the Camaro Research Group - JohnZ. I was using his engine as an example for Jeff68 to see if my heat riser is on wrong.
The car is in my trailer and we're leaving at 6 am tomorrow!

very good score David!
Thanks Dawg! I'm very happy with the score.
That's great. So, fix a few simple things, get 1000 points next year, then start driving it?
Next year it would be in the Legends class which is 5,000 points. It's definitely a tougher class but I'm planning on trying Legends next year. I am fortunate to have the 68 and the other 69 to cruise around in....for now.
What was real nice about the show is that everybody was really trying to help each other out as much as they could. By the time the judges reviewed my car, other guys from both the Bowtie class, and Legends class had already pointed out 80% of the problems already. Also Chick stopped by and pointed out some stuff which was real nice of him.
I also got to help some guys out with some easy to correct items like swapping the horn locations around....before the judges got there. Since it's a point system, everyone seemed to be great about helping each other out. The only thing is that even though someone points something out, their advice may be incorrect based on the build date of the car.

Thanks Frank! He loved it and was very emotional when he was talking about the car. He said the main reason for selling it was because the Chevelle had AC and his wife (or girlfriend) was complaining about the heat since they were in Florida.
There were different sets of judges for different areas. I believe there were 7 of them. Two did the engine bay. Two did the body. One did the interior. One was checking underbody and wheels. Another did the safety check. I lost track of the time, but I think it was about an hour.

You were correct on the heat riser. I ended up getting a deduction for it. I was taking JohnZ's postings as gospel since he has a survivor car and he was a long time GM engineer during the time these cars were made.
Maybe a mistake was made and his was put on incorrectly at the factory. Survivor cars at the show had it on the same way you said your's was originally.

The nicest part was having Larry come see the car. He was very emotional about the car....but one thing he kept laughing about was, he said he had a lot more miles driving this car than I have. He's right. I know. I'll try the Legends class next year though and at some point....headers, real tires, real shocks, and driving.
There should be 2 to 4 (out of 8, not including the car-dealer, Dave Brock) of the former owners coming to check it out next year.
I posted this pic already, but didn't explain it....the dude on the left is Larry (bought the Z in 1974), the dude on the right with the extra-wide grin and the Chevy shirt is me...and the chick with the iroc-z tattoo on her neck is on the far right. Larry didn't send any pictures of her tat, but if anyone is really interested, I can ask Larry to send a pic.

It would probably be between 13 to 14 seconds. Stock first-gen Z/28's are not good quarter-mile cars. They don't have decent torque off the line.
They were made for road racing, primarily to compete in the Trans-Am Series back in the 60's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Am_Series
The engine limit was 305 ci (5 liters). Peak HP is at 5300 rpm and they were designed to run at high rpm's.

I'm not sure Frank. On my car, I never went that high. On my stock DZ302 on the engine dyno, it looked like Max HP=356 at 6400 rpm. The graph looks like it could have kept on going though.
Edit: The motor is 30 over, but other than that it's completely stock.

I checked out loads of original car pics and all are loaded with overspray since the intake was on before the engine was painted. At the factory, they had a box called a "dog house" that they put over the intake and then painted the engine. Overspray was everywhere.
It's funny that a guy who knows a lot about GTO's stopped by today and when I showed him the car, he leaned over and tried scratching the overspray off with his fingernail since he thought it was not right. :hanged2:

HA HA!
Not yet Ron! My daily driver looks like crap, the old truck looks like a nightmare, I put a dent in the good truck, the 68 is not clean, the big block 69 is not too bad, and the Z is spotless. I'd like to keep the Z that way for a little while longer.
The rust bucket nightmare blew out a oil cooler line this morning. I'm probably going to get frostbite from this pos truck, but I'm thinking about plugging up the two oil cooler lines since I only run the truck in the winter and only on my driveway.
better get the driveway paved in frt of your garage!!!!
then youll have no muddy tires!

At some point Dawg. When I recover from everything else I definitely want to put something nice in front of the Camaros.

A high school buddy of mine printed out some posters of the Z.
If anyone wants a poster, send me a pm with your address and I'll send one ....no cost.

6 days until the Camaro Nationals.
This year the Z is in the Legends Class which is about as squirrely as you can get for points chasing trailer queens. It's a 5,000 point class and they put in on a lift.
The 1969 former owner is coming from California, the 1974 former owner is coming from South Carolina and the 1976 former owner is coming from Florida. It should be real interesting.
Everything is pretty much set on the car except for one spot where there is a gap between the lower windshield trim (near the driver's side) and the outer cowl panel. The clip probably came loose when it was being buffed out.

after that....I'm not sure what else might be incorrect or how the car will do, but hopefully it will do OK.

It would be nice, but doubtful. The judges in the legends class are extremely knowledgeable on 1st gen and 2nd Camaros. It's little details like the wrong headmarkings on certain bolts, the wrong finish on a certain parts, reproduction parts, etc... that make you lose points.
It's not unusual for a 1st year legends car to score around 85%. If I hit 90% I'll be happy, and if I hit 95% I'll be ecstatic.
The clip will be fixed on Monday. lol.

The trip to Maryland didn't go smoothly and my trailer brakes need some major work.
Anyway, the car scored 94.6% and I'm happy with the score. I didn't get the detailed info yet on the deductions but I should have them in about a week or so.
I'm not 100% sure why, but it was nerve-wracking for me to watch the car being judged this year.
The 1969 former owner came from California.
The 1974 former owner came from South Carolina.
The 1976 former owner came from Florida.
They were awesome guys to hang out with and all of them want the car back.
I'll post up some pics soon.

Thanks Frank!!!
I'm not sure if it's wiring or the brakes themselves. It was working when we left but not long after the truck brakes were taking the entire load while braking. At one point I was braking while coming around a corner and it felt like the back end of the truck lifted off the ground.
