Yep. Nerd cars. Every single one of them, mine included. lol.
I had a good time anyway! The former owners were very cool and swapped a lot of stories about when they actually DROVE the car everywhere.
Left to right: DavidS (2011), Larry (1974), Al (1969), Jack (1976).
Alfred has the most miles. He drove it from Missouri to Illinois to California, where he used it as a daily driver for about 5 years, and then to Texas.

Nice catch! His car is a rallye green 69 Z/28 almost the same as mine except he has a cowl induction hood (which came out 1/2 way through 1969) and he does not have an endura bumper.
Also, he has the only X11 code 1st gen Z/28 as all others were X77 or X33.

Jeez....it's been a while since I posted details on the 69 Z.
Between fixing up the money pit (house), work, family life, and a 1st gen disagreement, I got off track with fixing up the Z and didn't do anything on it for a year.
Jeff68 has been getting me back on track and focused. The devil is in the details. He has been helping me research what is correct and tracking down original hardware.
For the Z, after some simple operations stuff, I need 49 more points to make Legends gold. Not many cars have made it that far.
I was feeling burnt out, but, with Jeff's help....I will hit gold level. The plan is to hit gold and then start driving the car a lot more.
For hardware, the list is:
Parts Needed
-----------------------
1. Grille stiffener screws: I have the wrong ones (should be black?)
2. Front spoiler retaining screws: I have the wrong ones.
3. Front spoiler washers for outer braces: I don’t have any.
4. Header emblem: I have a reproduction on there. Need a great condition NOS one. Even in the 1969 pictures, the emblem is missing and grille has been repainted black.
5. Engine Lift bracket bolts: I have the wrong ones.
6. PVC, Hoses & Clamps: I need just one, clamp should have square ends with the correct logo
7. Front Shock: 3192477, dated correctly for a 2nd week Jan 69 car. Late 68 would be good.
8. Sway Bar & Links: link bolt should be fine thread. Mine is not correct.
9. Fuel Lines: #5,7. 8 wrong clips
10. Brake Lines: green clip is missing on cross member, #1 clip s/b blue # 4, 5, 6, 7
11. Emergency Brake Hardware: mouse ears incorrect
12. Fuel Tank: ground screw wrong
13. Weatherstrip: slight wear to rubber on on retainer, pinch weld on driver missing metal tab
14. Battery & Hold Down: wrong hold down
15. Battery Cables: ground wire to therm housing missing star washer

wow for a running driving car. thats alot of shit!! good luck!!
DavidS
08-22-2015, 10:35 AM
Yep. Since I'm the 9th owner, a lot of changes were made over the years.
For example, in 1969, someone:
took off the front spoiler
removed the grille and painted it black
did not put the Z/28 grille emblem back on
http://www.z28.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/z28-01-600by300.jpg
45 years later, I then:
picked up the wrong spoiler hardware
bought an grille emblem on EBay that I thought was original but is a reproduction
got a bunch of deductions
A lot of the stuff is bolts and misc hardware. I've got most of it coming in.
DavidS

Some of these things, like the grille emblem are a pain in the ass.
The Z/28 grille emblem is part # 3958642.
1969 assembly line correct, the “28” is silver. There is no part number on the actual emblem.
"Over the counter" emblems sold in the early 70's had the correct silver "28". In the mid 70's and later GM sold over the counter ones that have a white "28".
I bought a silver "28" emblem on EBay in the original gm box. I'm not sure why it's not correct, but it was judged as "repro".
ILuvPizzaTimes10
08-24-2015, 12:35 AM
maybe because NOS is a part over the count made after the production of the actual car. so it was not installed at the plant at time of manufacture. But "aftermarket"? either way stupid thing to lose a point over. its still a GM piece.

There are some real odd-ball things in judging, but I can see why they want it "assembly-line correct" vs. "over the counter". At least I can understand the specifics of why they want it that way. Except for this grille emblem. I spent a lot of time looking at it and so far the only difference I can find vs. another one that has the original box is a shade of color difference in the Z.
There is a very knowledgeable guy on Camaros and Corvette’s (he is also a NCRS judge) and he has an unrestored 69 Z/28. He was also a GM engineer in the 60's. His name is John Hinckley and he goes by the user name JohnZ.
He has a term he likes. It’s “New Old Replacement Stock”, NORS.
to quote John, they may be described as NOS, but they're not - they're actually NORS (New Old Replacement Stock), just like 99% of the stuff on eBay that's advertised as "NOS".
Assembly Line > NOS > NORS > Close Repro > Way off Overseas Repro

TRUE ^^^^^^^^
The 2016 Camaro Nationals are coming up in exactly 60 days. I got so burnt out two years ago that I didn't go back last year.
There is a saying that the "devil is in the details" and it's the weird stuff like underbody color (don't get me started), a few incorrect bolts, and rear sail panels where when it was reupholstered the pleating went in the wrong direction. However, a few things make no sense to me, like on the rear stripes I was deducted for "corners not sharp" which when I compare my rear stripes to original pics I can't tell what the deduction is for.
Jeff68 has helped me out in a huge way in figuring things out!!!!
With Jeff's help, the good news is that I should be about 50 points away from hitting Legends Gold and I should have more than enough stuff straightened out to hit it.

It's a week a way and there's about 5 small items that I forgot about like the seat latches that they said were in poor condition. They have to be sent out to be plated.
Another thing is that there is a lot of conflicting info on the flashers. There are two flashers:
1) Hazards on the fuse panel
2) Turn Signals under the dash
Trying to sort it all out, I think that:
Fuse panel/Hazards - Tung-Sol 552 or Signal-Stat 170
Underdash/Turn Signal - Tung-Sol 224
So.....unless I figure something else out, that's what I'm going with.

The Z did great in Legends judging this year. It jumped right over gold and made platinum!!! I don't believe that very many cars have made it that far.
The score was 98.5%.
I have not slept much this past week and I am beyond tired. As soon as I can think clearly, I will post pictures. I ended up being parked between a lemans blue Yenko (with a numbers matching engine and rear end) and a lemans blue COPO and that made for some really cool pics that I haven't taken off the camera yet.
DavidS

I looked through the judging records and I believe only 14 cars including my Z have ever made platinum in Legends which is a 5000 point class.
It was awesome being parked between a Lemans blue Yenko and a Lemans blue RS COPO. There were 201 Yenko Camaros sold directly out of Yenko Chevrolet and I was told by the owner that it was one of 3 known to have it's original engine.
Having the other COPO car in the pic is the icing on the cake.
That is a once in lifetime pic for the Z!

Thanks Alex! Yes, you are correct.
There were a few things that I did not want to change and I wasn't sure how many points I could get back on things like the hood gaps not being perfect, since they were never perfect even off the assembly line.
So....I tried to get as many items fixed as I could. I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out!
I received great technical advice from Jeff68 (on this site), Mike Labrecque, Dale Murphy, and Chick Renn.

It's gotta be a show for big dogs if it costs $150 just to be in it!
LOL.
Yep, and it's mostly just the owners and sponsors paying.
Next Sunday’s show is free to the public (http://www.boston.com/cars/news-and-reviews/2014/09/13/next-sunday-cars-take-over-boston-common/VjdvILFYURCR5HEo2loTdK/story.html), one of the ground rules for using the public park. You can expect 20,000 spectators to wander through the Common during the five-hour program. “It’s almost like an art exhibit,” says Doucette. “It’s both calming and inspiring.”
The cars are behind the same steel fencing that’s used along the Boston Marathon course—a coincidence that doesn’t escape Doucette. “We want to make this an international event,” he says, “along the lines of both the Marathon and the July 4 fireworks.
“Two things differentiate us. We’re a low impact event. We start setting up at 7 a.m. and by 3 p.m. the objective is to have Boston Common looking like nothing had happened on the show day. Another is that we don’t interrupt normal city life.”
The only folks inside the barriers are car owners, show sponsors, and those who want to pony up $75 for a VIP ticket or $50 for inside access.
“We’re not pushing those tickets,” says Doucette. “Those are for the few who have the need or desire to be inside.
“Our business model is different from a show that is dependent on admission fees. Our funding comes from solid sponsors and the money is there for us. It costs $100,000 to put on the show and we donate $25,000 to the city. (http://www.boston.com/cars/news-and-reviews/2014/09/13/next-sunday-cars-take-over-boston-common/VjdvILFYURCR5HEo2loTdK/story.html)”
Most of the money is probably coming from sponsors though. Only 100 cars invited x $150 per car = $15,000. Another $10,000 is needed just for the donation to the city.

There were some beautiful cars there. I was in the same class as a 1930 Duesenberg Model J. Man, that car was beautiful. The Audrain Auto Museum from Newport Rhode Island brought it. I was taking a few pictures of it and I was told it was worth between 2 to 3 million.
When, I was leaving though, the tow vehicle looked like a really beat up 80's Ford Econoline. A little weird.
